Stupid Reef Pet Tricks...

At night, throw in some frozen mysis shrimp and watch your Nassarius snails pop up out of the sand bed like zombies as soon as it hits the bottom. They'll all head straight for the shrimp like little zombies in the night. Kind of eery...

Yeh...they are impressive. I find that as soon as I add a flake to the tank for my colwn that they are the first to pop up out of nowhere. Once in a while it is fun to bury a flake or other small piece of food just below the surface of the sand and watch them dogpile each other.

Those Nassarius snails pop up regardless whenever they smell any food. Every time I put in flakes, mysis or whatever, they'll rise. Cool thing to see. My clowns are also impressive fish to see, as they go nuts during feeding. They fear nothing and they also eat directly out of my hand.

Ok - how come my Nassarius snails will go anywhere EXCEPT the sandbed?? They will travel over rocks and glass - but sand cannot touch their body . . . and weirdly enough they also travel together as a pair - staying within an inch of eachother.

That's weird. Mine are almost ALWAYS under the sand until evening, then they come out and forage for leftover food on the sand. Are you sure you have Nassarius? Maybe you have something else?? Do yours have a little "periscope" that sticks out ahead of them?? I call it a periscope because when mine are under the sand, their little periscopes are the only things showing -- they stick them up out of the sand. I think it's their "food radar system. " :)

I had some of the nassarious obsoletas once and they didn't go into the sandbed much either. The nassarious vibex stay in the sandbed though as does another species that gets larger that my LFS usually carries.

if you want more entertainment add some spagehitti (spelling) worms. when mine are cruzing the sand the worms grab them and the snails freak out.

I wish I had a tankful of spaghetti worms, all of the places that I have ever seen them want a small fortune for them plus some major $$$ for shipping.
