Still having Algae Problems

I began cyclying my 24g nano about 4 months ago and started to add some critters and coral after about a month and a half. I am still having rediculous algae problems. It is dark brown/green and its is very stringy and hair like. I seems to cover most of my coral including a candy cane, frogspawn, and alveopora. It seems that they don't like it very much either. I live in Kalamazoo and the tap water sucks here which is what might be my problem. I have been adding prime during water changes to dechlorinate and detoxxify the water by I think the water is still not up to par. I checked onliune for a water report but the PDF like 200 pages long and way more information that I needed. I was wondering if poor tap water could cause advance algae growth, and what the average price of R/O water at most LFS's were. I took some pictures but the upload fails....

Yes, that could be the cause. I believe it has something to do with silicates in the water. I buy ro/di for .50 a gallon and bought my jugs at (gasp) wal-mart.

can you drop the link to the pdf file? Tap water can have all kinds of affects on our tanks. Personally I run it in my tanks but have been considering changing to RO water. It's just one more way to keep the tanks balanced.

I've been told it's the phosphates that do it. If you have the ability to get RO/DI then do it. Or you can get a RO filter for like $150.

oh yeah, and how long do the filters and membranes usually last on the Mighty Mite? Is it worth buying the unit when R/O water is 3.50 fro 5 gallons at LFS?

So, will you all hate me if I tell you my water system tap water is RO/DI???
Desalinized RO/DI.
I know I suck.
I still don't use it though... bc phosphates can leach from the water lines.
As can copper.
