Star polyps not opening...

Hey guys,

I lost my xenias and I have removed them completely from the tank, as to avoid more ammonia.

But I have noticed that my star polyps have not opened up since all this started. It's been 3 days, can anyone shed some light, are these going to die too?

Frogspawn doing good, plate doing good, all button polyps doing well, fish doing great.

Sorry Mike, I can't really comment much on them. The two small patches of them I have in my tank now are the first ones that that have done well. I tried them several times in the 55 and they never opened up once.

I'd do a largish water change to maybe help things out.

You've bought some for your 55 and they never opened up ? How much time did you leave them in there before you realized it wasn't going to open up? I was almost at that scenario, but let me tell you, my green star polyps were doing awesome every day, even the blue knuckle would chill in there and just love it, but one day the bi-color blenny started getting really tutorial and was biting everything he thought wasn't cool, including the green star polyps, I would litterally watch him munch on them and see the poor little particles get sucked away through filtration. I almost took him back because of his destructive nature, but I gave him a chance, and took a bigger chance aquascapping. It was a real PITA for sure, but the end results were quite pleasing. I relocated the rock where the green star polyps were growing to the other side of the tank, and kinda higher, the bi-color would try to hang out there, but didn't really like it as much, he even stopped picking on it too. What ended up happening, he found a hole in the lower left side of the tank and hangs out there, and when he wants to be seen, he hangs out and perches on top of the green hairy maiden. Well during that time of when bi-color was picking at the green star polyps, they did not open for almost a week and a half. But because of the aquascapping and the bi-color leaving it alone, in time, they came out again and started to expand back out to how they were again and regenerating where it was hurt.

Having said that, to Mike:

Just wait it out and see what happens, they should come out again, just give it time to recover.

I left them in the tank for well over 2 months. They never came out at all. The guy I got them from had them literally covering the back wall of his 210. The whole back of the tank looked like a field of grass moving in the water. He had two large powerheads on the back that were covered in them as well. He had to point them out to me. You could just see the inlet and outlet holes.

mine can be testy. They havent opened in about 2 days. I treated my tank for flatworms and did some rearranging. I have found that if i direct the flow straigh onto them they come out.

A bunch of stuff in my tank closed up for several hours to a couple days after I treated with flatworm exit. It didn't seem to do anything any permanent harm, but you could tell some things didn't like it much.

Star polyps are tough as hell. Those suckers are really hardy for the most part. Sorry the xenia didn't make it. I was pulling for them!
