SPS and Pc's????????

I have a 10 gallon tank with 60 watts of power compact lighting. if i was to place some of the low light Sps corals such as montipora digita(sp?) high up into the rocks say about 3-4" from the light would they survive? post your input.

Montiporas should do fine under that lighting, especially if high in the tank. I keep Monti Cap under PCs and it's growing like crazy.

what about SPS in a ten with 80w lighting? I like acro a lot, and the new tank is 2.2 gallons and it has 18 watt lighting, I would like to do mostly acro in there, this ok?

RedParrotBubbles85 - Montipora is fine, might not get as great color, but fine.

ExiledInfidel666 - nope, not going to happen. Some say you can get growth but not color if that is a 70w metal in there, but best bet is to put a 150W DE MH over the 10 if you want acro. Even some people put a 250 over thier 2.5 gal. Sorry to sound like a bearer of bad news.

well id rather do something like a 75, i mean 250 over a 2.5, some people may do it but they must be cooking there fish, if I get a 75 retro fit for my pico and a 150 pendent for the 10 will that work?, and god il have to really up grade my fan for a metal halide in the pico, its a wooden hood and its small details please

sorry its actually 70w that I want to put under the picos hood, the one the guy sells that makes the hoods, the one in the november contest, hes got the 70w HQI all set up about $150, 10k, will this be enough?, im more concerned about the pico right now, the 10g will be easy, il just get the coralife pendent, I think thats who makes it 150w, well yea help me out with the pico please, and how powerful a fan do I need?

In general, if you want to keep sps corals healthy and happy, you need intense lighting. This means MH, VHO, T-5 or some combo of. The brighter the better. With anything else, you may keep them alive, but chances are they will grow very slowly and turn some shade of brown in color. If you want to keep acros, you might as well get 250w. MH and call it a day. Also, sps need nutrient poor water,(most people think they have nutrient poor water, but have nutrients in the water their test kits don't even show) stable temps, alk, and Ca. Gonna need enough flow to keep the corals "washed" also. Nanos don't make a good choice for a mixed tank of softies, lps, and sps for that reason. The high flow needed by the sps for good health washes the sand bed into a pile, and rips the flesh right off softies and lps. If you want sps in a nano, best to set up their own tank. Sorry to get carried away, I just LOOOVE acros! :D

well their wont be any LPS, maybe one in my 10gallon, but the ten is big enough I can make low and high current areas, but my my pico, uh this may be a problem, I would go and up grade the pumps but the main one is built into the tank, it was the only way I could do it, I could probably keep a 250w cool enough by putting 2 powerful fans, one incomming and one out going with large vents, itl make it like a wind tunnel in the hood, well it would be a wind tunnel actually, what if I, was to get a small power head and get it on a timer switch, the scwd will still be functional but it wont be an even current but it will keep the coral clean, I wonder how the clown goby would bear agianst the great current, yea that may not work,
and addition to the 250w il change the day light fluorecent to another actinic making 18w of actinic

well what could I put in the tank right now, theres just about 9 watts per gallon(10,000 and actinics), and alternating 70gph currents plus the water from the fuge(fuge has 10 watts of 6,700) overflowing, it shoots strait down almost when it comes over the over flow, a fuge half the size of the tank is in there, would like to house the yellow clown goby, this is becomming a nightmare now :D :?
