Sponge from a cichlid tank?

During the cycle could i use a sponge from one of my cichlid tanks or would all of the good bacteria die off because of the salt water?

The bacteria would die and cause an ammonia spike, which is what you want for a cycle to start. Just do not use the sponge or a live fish. Just throw some live rock in the tank and your cycle will start.
