Skimmer intake depth

I read recently (not here) that if you place your skimmer pump intake more than a couple of inches below the water surface 'it is a waste of time'.
Is this correct, wholly, partially??

I heard similar things. I think it depends on your setup and the skimmer that your using. Curious to see what people say about this topic as well. I have an ASM mini G and was looking for info on the proper height, but couldn't find anything. The directions just say put it in your sump and turn it on. It has collected some goop, but then again my tank is pretty new and there isn't much goop in it.

I think that reefman5511 has hit the nail on the head. In the case of a HOT skimmer you would want it to be skimming the surface of the water to get rid of the film that accumulates there. In the case of an in sump model the surface skimming has already been taken care of by the overflow that drains that water into the sump.
