Sick shrooms?!?!?

So..I've decided to start feeding my corals every night in hopes extra food will equate to more growth and reproduction. And so far everything has been pretty happy...fat and happy.

But when I get home today my green hairy shrooms are NOT happy at all. They seem to have expelled most of their water content adn one looks 'dried up'. That one was actually the healthiest of the three.

I'm feeding cyclops-eze, mysis shrimp and Formula 1. I did notice last night that a chunk of F1 fell onto the shroom and was consumed. Do you think this had an adverse effect on it?!?!

I really don't want these to die b/c they are very very cool. IMHO.

The rics/zoa's, brain/pink shrooms are all very happy. What did I do wrong?!?!

AndI haven't been feeding them gobs of food, like one mysis per shroom etc...

I think it was indegestion, the one that was doing the worst is now doing better and the other two have gotten worse. No more Formula 1 for the hairy shrooms. Just mysis and cyclops!

Who'd of thunk, maybe I should have slipped it an antacid. ah ha ha

at LFS today

I went to a diff LFS today and went to their freezer section and saw formula 1 and formula 2, but no cyclops. I saw frozen brine, and some other stuff, but not sure what's else is good to buy to give the fishies and corals variation. All i have currently is bio-plankton for corals, mysis shrimp, and flakes.

Ask your LFS owner about it. It comes in a bright red bag. A little goes a LONG way so my bar will last me a good long while. I'lls ee if I can't find a website...I hope my shrooms pull through.

Your mushrooms may have just been pooping.

Mushrooms are basically flattened anemones without the sting, and they have one hole that the food has to come in and the waste has to go out.
It doesn't seem as noticeable on the flatter types of shrooms but the fluffy ones definitely seem to shrivel up when they're trying to excrete.

I think it may be difficult to keep them from getting ANY formula 1, but then you're using 'hats' so it might not be that hard.

Cyclopeze comes in three forms that I've seen frozen, (my favorite), freeze dried, (good for the office), and flake, which I haven't tried yet.

I'd call around to the different LFS and find one that's carrying the frozen. It comes in a package the size of a large candy bar, excpect it to cost somewhere between $10 and $20. You can also find it online if none of your LFS carry it. When I first started looking for it none of the LFS in town carried it, and you couldn't order it online anywhere in the frozen form. I ordered one can of freeze dried that I still have 3/4 of, and then some folks on MARSH went straight to the source and managed to place a large order for frozen so I got a 6"x8" flat pack of frozen that I've used about 1/2 of. It's been over a year now, and my wife mixed in a bunch of both the freeze dried and the frozen when she was making up the bornemans mix. A little goes a LONG way.

hey

I'm sure I'll find it at the famous Tongs. There is never anything I can't find there. It's just when I was going home there was this LFS I hadn't gone to in a while and going back was a disapointment. They call themselves tropical fish something, and well all i saw was a few tangs, a few mandarins, a bi-color, a bunch of damsels, some corals here and there and that's about it.

The cool stuff I like to see are never sold there, they say it's too hard to keep.

sexy shrimp
anemone shrimp
bumble-bee shrimp
and various other fishies...

live brine shrimp
cyclopeeze (frozen or any kind)

I'll check out this other store that's 2 minutes away from my pad, it's tropical reef, and they are my second favorite place to go to. I am going to call, both them and Tongs to find both live brine shrimp and frozen cyclopeeze.

Lastly,
To feed corals directly....is it easier to turn off pump, use a turkey baster and pump directly on them with some bio-plankton and also some cyclopeeze?

That's the best way to do it as far as I'm concerned. Although I don't always practice it. I need to rearrange my surge protectors so that it's easier for me to turn off the pumps and close the ball valves leading to the tanks to keep the siphon from leaking back into the sump. At this point it's kind of a chore, so I don't always turn off the pumps.

I've found that if I don't turn off everything, my skimmer goes nuts when I feed cyclop-eeze. Same thing with golden pearls and marine snow. Never had a prooblem with the dt's tho.

Actually it's best to turn off any mechanical filtration when feeding anything planctomic.

Well everything is back to normal.

I'm surprised you can't get cyclops in CA, most stores in San Diego carry it. Frozen too, and yeah, everything I feed I use less and less. I turn off my pumps, it allows everything to get consumed and for the cleanup crew to take care of leftovers so it doesn't rot in the filtration.

Tank is looking good again, just waiting for those guys to start reproducing. My zoa's dont seem to feed as much though. I haven't figured out how to get them to eat, the mysis is too big so the cyclops should be best but I don't see them actually feed?!?!
