should I lower my temp?

My tank is at a steady 82 and has been that way for 1 - 1/2 years. Over the weekend I added 2 margarita snails to my little tank (by the way its 20g long) and after some research I see that they prefer a cooler tank. Has anyone used these little fellows and should I lower the temp in my tank?

What has your tank heated so much? From your lights? What's the lighting? If you have a temperature guage, set it lower, to about 78. If it's your lighting, and it's too strong, and you have nothing to chill the tank with, then it may get bad. I know my bro was talking about a cooler that will be made for nanos, but I dont know how soon, hopefully he'll see this post and give you more details on that.

I think my heater is probably set too high. I live in Michigan so it is quite cold here now and I keep my heater set a bit higher. My LFS has always been pretty good and they havent mentioned that its too high so i never changed it. I will lower it tonight when I get home Ive read that these snails like it around 70 but isnt that a bit too low?

Hey what else you got in your tank? If just snails, I'd say I guess why not, but I'm guessing you have more than just snails to take care of, so what I say is mostly where I read for fish/tank care, they like temperature around 76 to about 81 tops. Optimal I believe is 78. I wouldn't go 70, that just appears to be too low. If you have nice things in your tank, I'd rather please them as opposed to snails, I'd get rid of them and get something that likes the temperature of 76-81 . Good luck and let me know, laterz.

Thanks for the help. I dont have a lot in my tank right now. A yellow tail damsel, a green filefish, a goby (I think, he might be a blenny I cant remember). I have a nassarius and the 2 new margarita snails as well as a few blue leg crabs and maybe a sand sifting star. I havent seen him in a few weeks so I dont know if hes still around. I have probably about 10 lbs max of live rock along with some dead base rock and that is about it at the moment.

There's nothing really wrong with 82, but it is kind of on the high-end of the recommended temp for reef tanks. If you can bring it back to 80 or so by turning your heater down I would. If it's gonna be more complicated than that to get your temp down, I'd just take the snails back and get something a bit more in line with your normal running temp.

Thanks, I turned my heater down a bit last night and I will just have to wait and see what happens. As cold as its been around here it might be enough to lower it just a bit. My house isnt the warmest either all my heat vents are in the ceiling and it makes it difficult to spread the heat around. Hey but on a good note we are looking at highs in the upper 40's Thursday and Friday! Its a heat wave!!!! :jacko: :applause:

damn forgot u out in michigan. I been out there twice on business trips, and it's freezing in the day and freezing in the night. A no win situation as it is hard to adapt to the weather being I'm a southern california guy that's used to weather in the 70's 80's. Anyway hopefully your tank will come down a bit, and it with the weather you got, you should be able to keep the temperature wherever u set it to. Good luck.
