SE and DE

What does UV light, and the abbreviations: SE and DE mean in relation to MHs?

SE - Single ended bulbs - Screw-in type MH bulbs they have UV shielding built into the bulbs.

DE - Double ended bulbs - These bulbs clip into the lamp on each end, are much smaller in size than SE bulbs, and have no UV shield built in, so there must be a piece of glass in front of them as part of the lamp that is coated to shield the tank from UV.

I've heard the DE's are slightly more efficient, but like incysor said, you have to put a piece of UV protective glass (can get at frame shops) between the bulb and the tank, or you'll literally sunburn your corals (and possibly hurt your eyes).

Most DE pendants and hoods already come with a piece of UV glass in them...
