The claws make me think carnivore so I wouldn't think he is reef safe. You could always donate him to the LFS for feeding to the triggers or something similar if you are going to get rid of him.

I don't have a postitive ID either, but the dark pointed tips to the pinchers make me think carnivorous as well.

Turning him loose in the ocean is not the best thing to do, you don't want to release non native species into the ocean. Releasing non-native species into the ocean is what all of the fuss about caulerpa is about out there in Cali. It would be more responsible to either find someone that wants him for a refugium of sump or don ate him as food for a tank that houses triggerfish and the likes.

Good point Skip...anyone ever see that special on the Discovery Channel concerning non-native caulerpa and its effects on the world's coral reefs? Pretty scary stuff. I know I don't even think about flushing that stuff down the toilet anymore.

I was going to say the same thing. Please PLEASE do not release anything from your tank to the ocean. Even if it is an indigenous species, it should not be released as it could have bacteria or a virus that could do really bad things to local stock.

Bring it back to an LFS, give it to a friend, or DESTROY it. I know that last option sucks, but it is the humane and proper thing to do in these instances.
