I would recommend going with another pump. I was looking in to the Rio 17 HF and heard NOTHING but bad stuf about it...from breaking prematurly, electrical shock/fire!!....trust me, it was a bummer, I really wanted to go with it. It looks like instead i will be going with a QuietOne 4000...they are compareable wattage, probably quieter just as powerfull and drsfostersmith.com has them on sale.

just my opinion,

Jesse

Here is a link to the comparable QuietOne 6000: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... 004+113041

It was the 4HF 260 gph. Found one on e-bay for 13.99. But know you have me thinking twice. Does the Quietone have the same fittings?

Wai...you are looking at the 26 hf right? like 1,500gph? If so, both the rio 26hf and quietOne 6000 use 1" fittings.

Dont get me wrong, i currently use a rio 50 and 90, but i wouldnt recommend these larger model pumps.

no the pump im looking at is a 260 gph. its for a nano 12. You had me scared there for a moment. Have you heard bad things about there real small pumps? Now im reading that people go with the minijet 606 but that pump omly puts out only around 150-160 gph

Maxi-Jet Powerheads are one of the most reputable brands of powerheads in the market, they are UL Approved and it’s a very reliable pump.

I had a NC12 original setup as a hospital tank with a maxijet 900, which gives you a flow rate of approx. 110 GPH, including the headloss. I had good results with this pump, and it worked out really well IMO. Also the Maxijet 900 is definitely more energy efficient and puts out less heat than the 1200.

Here are the specs for the Maxijet 900 and 1200

Maxijet 900
Wattage: 8.5W
Max Flow: 230gph
Dimensions: 3.5" L x 2" W x 3.25" H

Considering the headloss of one feet vertically, the maxijet 900 will give you a flow rate of approx. 110 GPH

Maxijet 1200
Wattage: 20W
Max Flow: 295gph
Dimensions: 3.5" L x 2" W x 3.25" H

Considering the headloss of one feet vertically, the maxijet 1200 will give you a flow rate of approx. 190 GPH

Are you talking about a powerhead for inside the tank? Im talking about the stock pump for circulation. Would like to upgrade the internal fist to get it over 150 gph. But dont want to overkill it. After I do the circulation pump I was going to do a power head for the inside of the tank.

The maxijet 900 will fit perfectly in your return pump chamber and will replace your stock pump. All these pumps are powerheads, but are used as return pumps for the Nano Cubes.

The pump is rated to do 230gph but you say it is only doing about 110? Wouldint you want it to be in the 200 or something? Having a hard time choosing!! Rio hyperflow says 260 gph, Minijet 606 is around 156gph or would it be lower? IM SO CONFUSED!! Please help. Chris at Nanocustoms has a rio hyper 260 gph for 27 bucks was going to get that one. Does a flow controll matter or do you want it to go balls out? I noticed a tank on this site (Nano 12) with a small power head on the inside right of the tank for even more flow would that be overkill. Just so many choises. (As Always) Thanks for everyones help ahead of time.

I just made a quick calculation using ReefCentral head loss calculator to give you a more accurate figure of how much flow you'll be getting with a vertical climb of approx. 12 inches.

Check out this headloss calculator where you can choose different pumps and powerheads, so you can have a better idea of what the pump flow rate really is, based on different applications.

Will the Maxi jet 900 replace stock pump without doing a bunch of stuff to it? Just unscrew one and screw the new one in?

You don't need to do any modifications to it. Just hook up your flexible tubing to it and it's ready to go.

I guess what im trying to get at is what is a good upgrade for the flow? Where do I want to be? Is the maxi900 going to put out alot more than the minijet 606. Its a toss up between the 2. Leaning toward the maxi 900. Also would it be ok to put a very small power head in the tank itself? Would there be an advantage to this? Thank you for being so patient!!

The Maxijet 900 will give you a better flow rate than the minijet 606 and I don't really see a need for you to add another power head in the tank itself. As long as you are getting between a 10 to 15 turn over rate you should be fine. I own a minijet 606 as well, but it's mostly used for the nano cube 6 gallon. You are going to be fine with either the 900 or the 1200. If you choose the 1200, I would recommend a spraybar to distribute the water flow more evenly across the water surface. They are both really good pumps and you can't really go wrong with them.

P.S. The minijet 606 will give you approx. a flow rate of 75 GPH with a 12 inch vertical climb and IMO is not enough for your tank.
