Ricordea update (4/4)

I just recently purchase a ricordea off of ebay. It was sent May 20th and I recieved it two days later. The ricordea came in a box with no styrofoam lining or heating pack in the box (my area is practically cold as of right now). As soon as I opened the box I noticed the ricordea dettached itself from its original rock and the water was thick with slime. I did the acclamation and placed it on a rock in my tank and noticed lots of slime coming from the ricordea. I knew that the thing wouldn't settle itself for a couple of days, but maybe 7 hours passed and I check on the little thing and it was practically suck in the rock, as if it lost its stamina, it has no color to it like it did when I recieved it, AND little fragments are falling off of it. Did my ricordea die on me?

Here is a recent picture of it, I know its not good but I put a circle around the ricordea to help you find it better.

When you say that pieces are falling off, what exactly do the pieces look like?

Have you contacted the ebay seller?

Well I can understand the translucents (sp?) a little better now.

It might help to go ahead and turn the lights off for the night and see if the stress level might go down.

Did you happen to get a temp reading from the water it was shipped in?

I didn't get the temp, but I know it wasn't in range. My area is cold as of right now, the temp today was about mid 20s, and the bag felt cold. It came in a reg. postal carboard box with newspaper surrounding the bag, no heater pack, no styrofoam lining. So you could imagine how cold the water was.

Let's hope the seller doesn't give you a hassle, it sounds like improper shipping. Let's hope the poor thing makes it though :???:

That is terrible. Is it a WHOLE ricordia? It's not like half of one? Sounds funny but SOME sellers show the whole item in auction but send you a frag or piece of it.

Either way, if pieces are falling off of it - its melting which usually means it will not survive. Rics are hard to kill. Sounds like the shipper did not do a good job pre and post.

-I'm guessing it was the whole ricrodea, it was pretty tiny, no more than an inch long. And the ricordea has disintegrated. I found nothing more than little pieces of it on the rock. I wonder if that's not good for my water?

If it has melted down to nothing, then try to syphon what you can out and do a waterchange. Just keep an eye on your params.

Sorry that it didn't make it! Any word back from the seller?

Update of the replacement ricordea. Took some of your advices from the chat and place the ricordea in a shot glass last night. As of this afternoon, it looks good, nothing has come up. There are two ricordeas on a rock, one is bigger than the other. I checked up on them last night by turning on the lights and once they bloomed I noticed that the bigger ric was toching the smaller one, I notice that the little ric was giving off something once they touched, looked like he was giving off smoke. They are practically ric buddies on this rock, but an the rics harm eachother when they touch?

1. I'm sorry to hear about your loss but told you so it was dying :whever:  anyways.

2. i have 2 pairs of ricordias like that one big one and a tiny small one and they touch each other and dont seem to hurt each other like jennie said i dont think they will harm each other.

3. skipm how is that " spawning event" ( cause if like maubee described that means my frog spawn is doing the spawning thing cause it did it a week ago but the next day was fully open like always ...and i thought thats weird maybe my frogspawn decided to have a cigarret

4. PLEASE POST SOME PICS MAUBEE PLEASE.... PICTURE PICTURES. :dance

So far so good with the ricordea. The ric adapted pretty well in my tank and is in good condition. Later today I am expecting to recieve a zoanthid and a pistil shrimp. If I could get a couple of suggestions on what is the safest acclimating process that is good and for how long. Thanks, I appreciate it.

the best way to acclimate anything is with a drip acclimation .....this method is where you take airline tubing and tie a knot in it and have it drip into a holding bin with your "new" resident in the holding bin ....it is easy and the most reliable way to acclimate any new critters ....
we take a pitcher and place it into a bucket run a drip line from the tank into the holding bin we allow it to drip anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours then with a gloved hand remove the specimen to the tank and run in fresh salt water as you would with a water change HTH

Good to hear that the new ricordia is doing ...GREAT.... as soon as your zoo's open ..picture please  ... and about pistol you will see what a mess he does with a deep sand ...mine is always making new caves and taking all the LS out in the corners and in the front of the tank ...(covering some corals that are located in the sand bed)... i love him cause is interesting to see him being a good Maid  but got a hate him to do all that mess...

Thanks guys for the help. Right now I am at the acclimating process, so far the shrimp is still in the bag, but should there be any signs that I should look out for if something goes wrong? I'm planning on doing the drip acclimation process for two hours, I hope that's enough for him. And i'll try to take updated pictures, but they won't turn out that great cause my camera isn't high tech like most of yours. Thanks again. Any feedback will help.

Well 2 hours of acclimating i think will be fine more than fine and well pistol shrimp are really hardy....... i acclimate mine for 15min then put him on tank 1 1/2 months later he still there... but let me tell you dont worry if he hides too much that is normal he will be in his cave all the time and well you will see him more if you introduce any goby that will pair with him or he will be out during feeding time....but if you dont see him for 2 days you can always here a night a click or like something is nocking in the glass....that's him saying dont worry im STILL KICKING
