Reefman's 20 gallon long stand...

So this is my current DIY project...a stand for my new setup. It is oversized so that I can fit a sump/fuge underneath (feel free to voice any comments/suggestions you may have for this sump/fuge in my post in the refugium section). It is also just under 36" tall because a 20L is only 12" tall so I wanted the tank to be easily viewed without crouching down too far. I am currently in the painting phase of this project, so here are the pics of it. FYI, I got the general idea for this stand from fishandtips.com ---> http://www.fishandtips.com/index.php This thing is pretty strong...both my dad and i sat on it and moved around a little to make sure it didnt twist or torque due to the height (BTW, that is around 375 lbs, about 125 lbs more than a filled 20L). Most of the joints are glued together and i used 3" screws...no nails.

Looks great and should do a good job for you......

One thing I might suggest is making that single leg in the center, removeable, so you can put the sump in easier and work on it when you need to......

Thanks for those links erik. i have studied the sump in the first link before, and i think i am leaning toward a design like that but using a 20L. i think the 20H that i have isnt the best choice.

yes...the inside dimensions are 31 1/2"Lx14"Wx31" T. So even if the 20L takes up the whole bottom, I will have enough hight to add a small shelf just for additives/food/etc etc.

you might be happier with the 20L, it gives you a larger sump area or a larger fuge area......either way. plus the long will give you more room for a skimmer. HTH and good luck

Stand is complete...

The stand is complete. Let me say that it took longer and cost more than I expected, but it turned out better than I thought so ehh...oh well. Here are the pics...this thing is strong and sturdy.

You can see the height difference between My 16G and my new stand. This is to compensate for the short stature of the 20 L, although I currently have my standard 20 sitting on it (16"T), and it looks pretty nice.

I put these two doors on there in place of the plywood paneling that didnt work out too well. I used the paneling on the sides and plan to put it on the back, too, if necessary.

These hinges are great!! No need to drill a hole like most hinges that mount INSIDE, and they were easy to install. They are spring-loaded 90 degree hinges...about $4.50 per pair at HD.

great job, nothing better than a finshed product that you did yourself. even if it takes longer and costs more, i think its worth it in the end. well done
