Protien Skimmer

So... what's this gizmo for, and why do I need one? (Or why do I not need one?)

Would it increase the time between water changes?

It removes organic compounds in your tank before they can fuel the nitrogen cycle.

If used properly, can reduce the need for water changes and/or increase your tank's available bioload.

If you keep up with large water changes like 10% weekly, then you really don't need one. For larger tanks they are necessary, but nanos can be kept without skimmers if you follw a schedule like this.

I do think that with LARGE water changes that skimmers are less necessary, but I also wouldn't consider 10% weekly a large water change... just IMO. Large would be somewhere in the 30%-75% range. I personally like and practice 50% total water volume changes every 2-4 weeks myself, but I run a skimmer too.

The easiest way to descibe a skimmer:

When waves crash in the ocean you get whitewater (a ton of small white bubbles) which actually float organic compounds out of the water. The skimmer is a device that replicates this natural process...
