power filter help

Hello, I am new to this forum and new to nanos as well. I had a 75 gallon FOWLR that my son absolutely loved. The storm :lighting came and went I was stuck in houston for 2 months and needless to say the tank turned into a cess-pool. Now everything is back in order my son is back home and i am starting him a nano. Now, after my sob story, on to the question. This will be a 10g FOWLR tank I have a skimmer on order, 12lbs of live rock, power head and i will hunt for some live sand tomorrow. What should i do with my HOB filter? Should I leave the carbon in or out? I've seen some post suggesting pieces of crushed live rock and some saying just use the filter as added circulation. I am so confused. Thanks in advance for your help.

i would get a HOB and use it for what they are made for - mechanical and chemical filtration - ie use the mech filter media and the carbon 24/7, if it one of the ones that has ceramic or any other kind of bio filtration you can remove that. you don't need additional bio filtration or rubble, your live rock in the tank should be enough especially with a skimmer. keep the mech filter clean weekly at least and change small amounts of carbon regularly.

If you have room for the filter go ahead and use it. Since this tank is going to be a FOWLR you can use the filter the way it is designed to be used, you don't have to worry as much about nitrates in a FO. It will also add some additional current to the tank and if you would like you can add additional carbon or other filter media like ChemiPure as desired. If it is large enough you may even be able to hide your heater inside of the filters box.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree. HOB is the way to go. The live rock and skimmer are both big pluses. The only thing I might add (not absolutely necessary though) is a small micro-jet powerhead or two, just to make sure you get good circulation around the live rock.

Sorry about the 75 you lost in the storm. I lost my 75 in Rita. Are you a member of the Louisiana Reef Club?

Thanks for all the feed back. I was a bit confused because i heard that running the filter is like recycling nitrates back into the tank. But thanks for clearing that up for me. PiratesReef i am not a member of the La reef club. Do you have info? And sorry about your 75 also. I hope we don't have to go through that this year.
