PLEASE HELP WITH MY ANTHELIA!

hey. I don't understand why my anthelia is doing this. It seems to have a portion of its tissue that's turning gray and looks considerably thinner than the rest of the healthy tissue. I can't figure out what's going on. Parameters are all normal.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0 - 20 ppm (within acceptable range according to reference book and test kit)

Tempeterature is at 72

Anthelia image taken with flash. Note the gray, discolored area of tissue

Image taken without flash. Discoloration is more pronounced:

Has anyone experienced this before or know what's going on? Appreciate your help!

Do you normally keep your temp at 72? I would raise it to 75-78, most of us run a little higher but thats because we can't keep our temps in the 75-78 range without a chiller. I have seen some of my softies do something like this before only to come back later and they were perfectly normal. I have no experience with anthelia though so i can't say this is definitely the case here. Hopefully someone else will chime in soon.

The guy at my LFS said to run it cooler, esp since the lights kick in and warm things up considerably (I have a glass canopy over my tank to prevent splashing). I don't know if that is sales motivated (run cooler so livestock doesn't do so well and I have to go and purchase more) or what, but liveaquaria suggest 72 to 78 range... what temp are you guys running on? skip, you said you run a little higher than 78, did I read that correctly?

thanks

my tank runs at 80-81. if you run your tank cooler like that, when your lights come on youmay experience large swing in temp...this can be stressful.

72 is too cold...turn your heater up to 77 or so...but do it over a couple day period, not all in one day.

My tanks are usually in the 79-81 degree range, with the pumps, lighting, powerheads, etc. its not really practicle for me to try and go lower with the temp.

In my experience with waving hand anthellia, it would constantly break off 'arms' or small pieces to reproduce elsewhere in my tank. It was kind of like xenia in that all it wanted to do was take over the world. Looks to me like that is what yours is doing.

Thanks for the help! Yeah another piece of my anthelia broke off. I noticed it when i came home today. It's funny because the "mother colony" is not that big to start with! haha should i just glue the pieces down?

You can attatch them where you want them otherwise they'll spread to places where you don't. You may also be able to trade them if you get them mounted on small pieces of LR.
