Pics of the New Tank

It looks good. The only suggestion I'd make, is that you might want to break up that large piece of rock into several smaller pieces with a hammer/chisel. It'll make it easier for aquascaping purposes as you add corals. Everything looks good though.

yea, its a 300.... the plan is a clown and probably a goby (something that sand sifts) and a pretty hefty cleanup crew... then ill move on to a couple corals...

I saw the pics on nano-reef and I like the new aquascape a little better. I was thinking of suggesting something like that. I would have put the big one actually on the smaller side of the small one instead of leaning the small one against the big one. I think that way you would get more are to mount coral to later.

Just some thoughts. I am dying to get my tank from the LFS. It is still in process at AGA.

Yea i was thinking about doing that, then the little rock stuck almost to the front glass if i turn it so the low side is near the large rock

here is the current pic:

I'd have to agree with incysor on this one. Using two larger pieces of rock is really going to limit the area that you have to glue frags to. It would be fine of you plan to keep just zoos or gsp, but even then it really won't have that "wow" factor going on. Breaking it up into several smaller pieces and stacking them will give you lots of nooks and crannies, and even caves depending upon how you arrange it. It'll give you alot more surface area to attach frags to. JMO.

so if i broke that large rock in 2, leaving 3 rocks... how would u arrange them? here is the tank now after my movements...also, what are the bulbous things on the rock?

The big rock needs to be broken first. Once it's broken you will be able to rearrange and get ideas. As large as that rock is it's difficult to move around and aquascape with such a large piece. You hit the glass too easy and you'll get frustrated.

Try to see if the rock will break in the middle, you'll have to take a chance on that a direct hit will split it in two, or maybe three pieces which would even be better.

Good luck,

From the pics it doesn't look like anything, just the shape of the rock itself.

Some types of rock have that shape vs ones that are more flat, or branching.

here is the tank after breaking up and re aquascaping... it was pretty gross, smelled really bad, had worms and dead mussel shells etc on the inside...

I've always found it useful to find liverock that had interesting shapes. The more nooks and crevices the rock had the better. I would recommend that you find rock that isn't so...solid...I seem to have better luck working with smaller pieces than I do with larger ones.

But it's looking good, keep us posted on the progress.

i actually prefer the larger rock look which is why i started with that huge sucker... i dont like the pile of rocks look (personal preference)...but i could use any advice on how to arrange the current rocks...

Cade,

That smell you got, when you busted up your rock is that of sulfur right? It's billions of bacteria that are encrusted in the center where the rock broke.

This is a sign that your rock is seeded with good bacteria. It should regenerate as soon as you added it back in.

Having several pieces is great, now you can begin aquascaping. Borrrow ideas from others and have fun.

That's the problem with larger rocks. You simply don't really have as many choices when it comes to how they'll fit in the tank.

I've got a huge chuck of tonga branch that takes up the center of my tank. I love the piece, but it can be frustrating at times to try to find places to put new corals because it limits my ability to rearrange quite a bit.
