Yea a lot of corals do come from the wild and yea if mine happen to die then I would go and replace them. Just like any person would do REPLACE what they lost. If it was that bad to have gonioporas then wholesalers wouldnt carry them neither would the consumer. Like I said before my clams are doing just fine...you know its different in every case. If I was improperly housing my livestock at home and at the store then why is everything doing fine in the store? No one else seems to think Im improperly housing my stuff at the store or at home. The owner of the store which is a close friend of mine sure doesnt think Im doing anything wrong to my livestock. Especially since he and his friends have been reefers for over 7 years.

I agree with Jesse. Respect the hobby. I did get to check out KChan's store and let me just say that it's one of most well run fish stores I've seen. Very clean and they're livestock is beautiful. They take really good care of maintaining there tanks more than others. All in all, it was an irresponsible comment but i don't think he's an irresponsible reefer.

KChan, PM when you guys get some crocea's.

I know that Gonioporas dont do well..but hey I run a store if anything does happen Ill just get new stuff. Thats one of the perks of running an aquarium store.
To all reefers on nanotank; I just wanted to clear a small misunderstanding.

I personally know KChan as I've gotten the chance to meet him at Great Bay Aquarium.

His store is immaculate and all of his fish both fresh and salt get grade A quality control in caring and it shows when you take home a coral or fish and it does really well; I speak from experience since I have been purchasing from him for the last 3 months and compared to some other LFS he is great in caring.

I purchased a beautiful frag from their show tank and he went in to remove the frag but backed away from it several times and gave up since he couldn't retract it without it getting hurt.

He called the owners wife and she has smaller hands and she went in and removed the coral for me; that's called caring to me.

On all my visit he calls me by name and asks me how each piece is doing individually; that's caring.

His comment I believe has been taken out of content as I spoke to him directly while at his shop.

He should have let reefers know he takes great pride in the health of all his corals in his tank at home; I know this because he has solicited me and many others for helpful advice.

This hobby is very undpredictable on healthy/sick specimens and even the hardiest corals can die over night; is that lack of caring?

I don't think so but what bothers us are individuals that purchase corals and then neglect them at home; inproper feeding, maintenance etc.

KChan doesn't fall into this category he does care greatly about the welfare of them.

What came out wrong in his comment is that we believe that he purchases them without knowledge and then when they die, he tosses them out and re purchases an identical coral.

This is not the case, he as I do, purchase corals and take risks and we learn. If they die it's an experience both negative and positive in that we learn from our loses.

Kchan is implying that if his corals/critters die he has the power to replace them with little loss financially; one perk of working at a LFS.

Now does he abuse this power and purchase identical corals when they die? I don't think so yet his comment may imply that.

Anyway, this response is not intended to fuel the flame it's just to clarify and keep this forum happy with everyone; it is indeed me who turned him onto this site for the caring and nurturing environment we have always been.

Jesse,
He knows you are an extremely educated reefer as I have personally talked about how much knowldege you have and share with the community and I believe he does respect your opinions, he was only misunderstood as most of us do our first time around; Jesse do you remember when Dragon79 was pimp slapped by Phishy?

Or how about when I pimp slapped Edgray and he almost left the forum; which we would have lost a great member.

Anyway forums are educational and I'm glad Jesse and KChan have dissucssed Maximum clams; I don't know anything about them and have recently purchased one. Jesses comments on them and KChans experience are going in my educational banks; thanks guys...

I read this topic about 5 times now trying to logically find truth to the matter. I second Jesse and Erik's opinion. Again everyone has there opinion so I'm just going to express mine. I read in 2050 the world as a whole won't have any seafood (crabs, fish etc....) and florida will be submerged in water due to the glaciers melting away. So when I read the section of getting corals from the wild and bring them to an artificial environment which supposed imitate their habitat and the corals dying, it does make me wonder. Atleast have some grief due to the coral being from mother nature....

sorry but i'm not trying to bash anyone in person here Kchan, i believe you are likely not trying to say what your words came across like, so although this may sound personal its not really directed at you - its just my opinion on a common concern of many of us hobbiest
i tried my best not to get into this conversation but island brought up a point we all need to be concerned about - the wasting of our natural resources.
jesse and erik - i hate it when good advice is offered and not taken but you have to let it roll. most people who have been at this long enough know that your advice was sound and good intentioned, but thats the way of it
T. maximas need more light then that system has to offer and belong on rock not sand - they need to attach. a couple of key strokes and mouse clicks would have found your advice is well supported - something a good hobbiest does - research! a month and a half is nothing - tell us how great they are in a year or better still in three years or five
there are some new goniporas coming in these days that "seem" to be fairing better to aquariums, but the standard green flowerpot he has is doomed - i don't know how many times this has to be tried before people quit buying them. you always hear the story about some guy who knew somebody that once kept one alive for a year but statistically its a bad use of our environment
anemones - the story is clear, yet many try without setting up a proper habitat despite the advice - and then come back and ask what to do when its dieing or its chopped up in a powerhead or moving about stinging everything
of course over the years i have lost many critters, and every one pains me. not because of the financial loss but because of the environmental concern. a responsible reefer needs to research their purchases and then provide the organisms in their care the best environment possible. we all lose animals despite our best efforts but still - THEME FIRST then critters. simple - if you want clams, anemones, tangs, whatever - research the environment to match their needs! coral reefs are very diverse microhabitats.
some of our purchases will always come from the ocean and that is not neccessarily bad because it supports the local economy and builds their environmental knowledge and concern, but buy captive breed whenever possible
its LACK of KNOWLEDGE that allows price gouging ebayers, chopshoppers, and poor LFS's to stay in business.
again not bashing here............ its just that its an important topic, especially for people just entering the hobby - have a nice day all....... :)

Well said John....

However I noticed that Kchan has not been around lately and it wasnt my intention to chase anyone off.

Kchan, your tank does look great... no doubt. I just had a few concerns... thats all. I think we have all voiced our opinions on those concerns and now it is time to shift back to the intention of this thread. I am sorry if anything I said seemed too aggressive for condescending... that wasnt what I was trying to do.

That by far is the funniest thing I have ever read, we would not be in this hobby if we really cared for the environment. A true environmentalist always leaves every thing just the way it was before he/she got there.

That means don’t take any thing out, don’t leave any thing behind.

Sorry to put a downer on your thread, but this hobby has nothing to do with the caring for the environment.

Also wanted to say nice tank. I’m picking up a NC24 next week, thinking of getting some clams myself.

Keep the pic's of the clams comming.

Update:

Just wanted to give an update on my tank. So far everything is doing good, I added a purple disk to the tank. But I have one issue my freaking blue knuckle hermit crab has eaten ALL of my Xenias. I did not know they can tend to eat small polyps. Now my rock with the Xenias is just naked! But as for the clams and Goniopora theyre doing great.

Update:

I haven't really added anything new to my 29g but I recently started a 20H tank. I kinda used the idea Brian aka Aquameni5110 did with the overflow. So I went down to Tap Plastics and had them cut me 3 pieces of black acrylic and cemented them together and made the overflow drains. I'm running a TAAM Nano Skimmer along with a 130w Odyessy PC with 1 12k Daylight and 1 True Actinic bulb. So far everything is ok just added LR and LS. I'll have pics up soon.

this is silly. a lot of us out here only buy aquacultured items...
I only buy frags from other's tanks and captively bred fish that i know who they came from to my LFS.

granted, i will agree that most people in this hobby could care less, some of us make conscious, careful decisions to take environmental care in stock and supplies.
