I LOVE it. Not a box full of zoas! (Ok Eddy bring it! :D ) Can you list out what's in there? I'm not so good at IDing. I think I see torch, zenia, frogspawn, bubble or hammer, candy cane, GSP, mushrooms, and is that a sun coral? How did I do :?:

I just noticed the clams... looks like two maximas? Im sure you may know this but a tank that is less than two months old is a little unstable for clams. Also, maximas LOVE light... the lighting in an all-in-one tank is most likely too weak for them. Keep a close eye on them and move them up to the top of the rocks as close to the light as possible. At any signs of stress or if they become unhealthy, you may want to remove them and find them a different home.

Well at first I had the clams on the rocks but they didnt like being there and decided to move themselves to the sand bed. So far they have been great..the mantles have opened up nicely. I got the clams at Great Bay Aquarium where I also run the place. But this is my first time doing SW..Ive always done FW. But ever since Ive started running the business for my friend Ive gotten into SW.

Hey Brian if youre interested in some maximas come on by the store if youre ever in the area. Ill give you a deal on some corals and fish. ;-)

Im sorry... I dont want to be a jerk BUT...

1) Goniopora in general do not do well in captivity. They are one of the only corals in the hobby that we know almost nothing about. They can be doing fine for months and then suddenly die unexpectedly. When they do so, they can wreak havoc on your system.

2) BTAs need an established, mature tank with plenty of light... again, not suitable for a nano in the long run.

3) 72 watts pf pc lighting may seem like alot, but they are very inefficient and do not penetrate the water nearly as effectively as other forms of lighting. Taking this into account, the clams... being 20" below the surface of the water... are not getting the light they need. Only T5HO's and MH could get enough light down to the bottom.

I point these things out to hopefully help you. If any one of those creatures were to die, they could cause some big problems.

KChan - I might be in your area tomorrow. If I am, I'll stop by and say what's up. I've been wanting to go to the Great Bay for sometime.

Flower pot coral? I thought that was zenia. LOL oh well, shows how much I know :D . Here's my question, if light won't reach the bottom then why did the clams move there?

Umm... they probably fell off the rock. Clams cant "move" themselves. They can force themselves into crevices and pivot themselves once they attach themselves to the rock, but if they ended up on the sand it was because they were trying to wedge themselves or find a more stable area and when doing so fell off. If they could really move themselves, they would be moving themselves up for sure. I can guarantee that 80%-90% of the PAR does not make it to the sand bed at that depth with PC's. Only about 60& of the light that is emitted from a PC bulb makes it into the tank due to it's innefficient "doubled" shape which causes alot of restrike. Of that 60% of light, only about *maybe* 20% is making it to the bottom.

If they were mine, I would get an empty shell or a small flat piece of LR and put it just below the sand. I would then put the clam over the shell or LR and let it firmly attach itself. It should take about a week to do so. Then I would take them and put them up as close to the light as I could.

Good luck,

Jesse

Personally, if I ran a store and KNEW that certain corals dont do well in captivity, I wouldnt carry them.

This, too, is a rather irresponsible comment... since you run a fish store, you find it convenient to NOT provide a proper house for your corals because if they die you can easily replace them? Most of the corals we get in this hobby still come from the wild, and to say that you "will just get new stuff" when your improperly housed corals/clams die hurts me. Personally, I dont see it as you going and getting a new one from your work, I see it as you removing another coral/clam from the wild so that IT TOO can be improperly cared for. It makes me sad... I'm done.
