Nice site...You've got some great pics on there. I saw you grew up in Tucson. I'm from Douglas, about 100 miles southeast from there, on the border.

Well I don't need a tutor persay but I do have quite a few questions. See, I love photography and all and I can get some of the coolest and most breathtaking shots. However, I have a canon G3 and I rarely mess with any of the features or buttons besides macro, zoom, and actually taking the pic. Oh and turning the flash on and off. Am I missing out?

Give me some pointers or some basics. I have read the manual but it doesn't do much for me, I am a learn by watching or listening kind of person. Sometimes reading if someone is able to put things in ways I can comprehend them.

If you just leave it on auto you might get some decent pics. I did.
However the quality of my pics went up, and the number of bad ones that I had to delete went way down after I started using all manual settings. I didn't/don't have any background, or training in photography, and this site is the single best one I've seen for explaining things to newbies. The site was created by a fellow reefer named Gregory. He's in the photography forum a lot over on RC, under the screenname gho. Let him know you found it useful if you like it, and tell him I pointed it out. He's a really nice guy that helps a ton of folks in that forum with info, and it's nice to let him know folks appreciate it.

I usually just use auto.

I think I will actually READ that link as I have started to already, and test some things out and see if I can improve my pic taking skillz.

Cool. I m glad this is helping people get to thinking abouth their potential photo skills. I guess I was too slow to the draw for the first question, but yes , as describes by incysor, using you manual functions will def. give you a lot more options when shooting. Good thing about digital is that its right there and you can correct it as you go. HAve fun and play around!! You'll be able to acieve the pictures you want and expect from your camera in time.

Hey Sam I'm Jose form CA I new to the site, and of course I'm having problems uploading pictures of my tank to the site. The only way I can get them to upload is if I resize the picture and if you do that the quality and detail of the picture suffers. I have seen other members uploading good quality pictures How they do it? I you like to see my pictures go to Forum 29 gal.and under "[email protected]" Thanks!

"[email protected]" is an email address, not a website, so you can't get to pics that way.

What are you using to resize your pics?

For the web your dpi should be 72. This should allow you to post decent sized pics without the file themselves being too big.

For example with these two images the smaller one is 600x450 pixels, at 72dpi, and it's 58kb. 600x600 is the limit to how large you can post an image straight off of your hard drive. If you want to post larger images you'll have to host them someplace that will allow direct linking like www.photobucket.com.
So in order to post the larger pic I have to host it in one of my albums on photobucket and link to it.
Looking at the properties of the images you posted in your thread in the 29g and up forum yours ranged from about this size up to 260kb or so, which still isn't a very large file, but all your pixelXpixel sizes were very small.

Hey photo64, i was wondering if u could help me. I want to buy a digital camera specifically for taking top quality photographs of my fishtanks. What specs should this camera have in order to be capable of taking the best possible photos?

I know your question was directed to photo64.. if he and you don't mind I will give you my two cents..

It totally depends on your budget.

One thing to keep in mind with this hobby and the photos you see, getting any camera of high quality will not automatically make you a skilled photographer. If your wanting a point and shoot with a perfect picture - It will never happen. It might (rare), but it will take some learning, patience and knowledge to get "excellent" pictures. Then again, you may never get the pictures you deep down want.

I just want to clear that up. Alot of people get sucked in after seeing great pictures, run out and buy a cam and then get really frustrated when they don't get like results or better. Doesn't work that way.

I myself have a $1700.00 dollar camera. Canon EOS 20D. The pictures I post are "OK" as is. I have yet to fully learn the system and get the best results I can from it. Once I achieve that, then I will be on my way to happyness. There are also many lenses for my camera, one of which I will be purchasing soon (macro lens) and that will aide me in getting even closer, tighter shots of my subjects.

Anyways, long story short - its all in how much you can spend, how much time you are willing to take to learn your camera and what you want to achieve with it. If your just "taking pics" and nothing more, no need to spend lots of money. Get a mid level or better. If you are going to be using your camera beyond reef photos - consider getting a better camera.

Any questions after reading this, I will be happy to help.

Again, no offense to you or who you were origionally asking. :)
