I heard those leads are diffrent than what they use. I talked to my lfs store and he's going to invest into these lights once another competitor comes up with their own fixtures. He said he'd save more than enough in the long run especially with electricity.

Check out nano-reef.com's lighting forum. I have read through several threads over there regarding the LED topic. Also reefcentral.com has several large tanks with LED lighting. If I recall correctly, I think Current USA is coming out with an LED fixture soon?? They are really quite amazing in that there is virtually no heat, they are very intense, you can adjust the spectrum, but they are SOO expensive.

Togdor, which LEDs were you looking to use? Do you ahve a link?

The only problem is that when you start getting to the high end outputs they start getting salty. I'm still trying to figure out the lumens on my lights and trying to convert that over to candlepower or vise versa to figure out how many of these lights i'm going to need.

If you're successful in building your own LED system, pleeeeease post in detail what you've done because I would be very interested in doing something like this as well. I just don't have enough knowledge in this area to know what type of diodes or resistors or how many or any of that.

Good luck and I'll keep an eye out for your thread. that fixture that you mentioned sounds way to good to be true. I guess that's why it's $850 though.

I would also be interestd in finding an alternative for LED lighting, the price of the fixtures on the market right now excludes me from ever trying them.

"The 14" units are from are original order back in April of 2006. We ordered a bunch, and for a lot of reasons we have stopped shipping the 14" units out. All the quality control issues that have been fixed with all the other lengths have not been fixed with the 14" unit because they are still from the original batch. "

the sticker price is a huge investment into something that may not work out. That's one of the reasons why I haven't invested much time into an LED setup. Nearly 2000 LED's is a pretty chunk of change to drop into a light system. If my current setup ever gets replaced then I might try it but atm I don't have $600 to invest into an experimental lighting system. 9.6hrs soldering LED's...man I would go insane...lol

Seriously that's a lot of soldering. And that's doing 3 lights a minute.... faster then I'd be able to do it.
