PC nanocube lighting questions

What if I was to go one full actinic bulb and one 50/50 bulb on my 24 nanocube dx? I was wanting to do a sunrise sunset, maybe by unplugging one harness from the ballast just to test, then hooking in a timer? Right now theyre both 50/50, would I be hurting anyhting by going one full actinic? I figured daylight was for growth and blue was for the colors. Thanks

Unless you plan on going fish only, I would keep at least some daylight in there. Although actinic plays a role in some photosynethetic processes, daylight will be the primary contributor. I have a 24 dx as well, I had an upgrade which independently controls 2 sets of bulbs. Ironically, I don't use the sunset/sunrise simulation.

K Ill leave well enough alone. I did unplug one harness at a time, and strangely both fans and 1 light goes off with either unplug. Did you wire all your mods up yourself? What else did you do?

I got my upgrades from nanotuners.com I upgraded the fans, added another 36w bulb and had the moonlights separated from the balast control. All the equipment was around $170ish if I recall right. I had a new LFS offer to install it for $50, took them 3 days, quite sure it should have been a lot more than that!

Now, mind you with the extra bulb, the heat runs a bit higher, so I have a small high velocity fan sitting on top of the lid to keep it cooler. Also, I run my lights at night when the room temperature is cooler as well. I didn't do any of these upgrades until I got corals that would benefit from the higher lighting. :)

I was going to go that route as well, its hard to find PC lighting equipment locally at Home Depot, havent been to Loews yet. Another problem Ill run into is the heat shield design, Im assuming Ill at least need to order that. Do you think 72w isnt enough for coral growth? I took a nice zoo frag from my friend, along with a few mushrooms on a rock, and the zoo hasnt opened up fully yet. Moved it a little lower, with some more current yesterday, well see what happens.
You dont run any lights during the day? Usually mine are on from about 11 to 8ish. Whats your timer like? And the fan is just any cheapo fan sitting on the canopy?

Actually 72w will suffice. Lots of people keep the stock lighting, user jennybugs does, she's got a really hopping tank. :)

How'd you acclimate them? Sometimes it can take days up to weeks for corals to adjust. I drip acclimate all my sensitive critters.

I have a coralife digital power center and yeah, the fan is like a $7 one from Wally-world. It's all black, and made of steel, so it's quite befitting in looks. My lights run from 7p to 2 am, when the house cools a bit from all the heat during the day. Otherwise, my tank temp would peak over 84 degrees! With the new lighting schedule and fan, my temp runs between 80-82 during the hotter days.

OK, maybe Ill try a later schedule. Right now its stuck around 84, even after cooling all night. Ill probably stop by walmart later and take a look around.

Got the exact one youre talking about, how can you beat 7 bucks when each fan replacement is 13? I cracked the hood a little with some golf pencils, temp dropped 4 degrees last night with it on all night, and is holding at 82 today. Ambient temp in the room is about 78-79
