I am so happy to find this forum!

I have had a 2 gallon marine tank since March of 2008. My intention in starting it was to "create my own live rock," and to that end I put in three dry rocks and a handful of live rubble.

Almost 5 months into the project, I note that my dry rocks are becoming colorful. I have a lot of tiny critters in the tank, too, including lots of strange worms, caulerpa, and even a microstar or two, two blueleg crabs, cheato, and a sun coral (the last three are the only things I bought, if I remember correctly).

I also have the most amazing collection of hair algae you ever saw (it's the Hair Club for Nanos, I swear), but am fighting it back slowly. The crabs have helped a bit. I also had some bubble algae come in on a wad of cheato, but so far it hasn't been a problem.

I won't post a picture until I defeat the hair algae, because right now the tank looks dirty in photos even though it really isn't.

The only filtration is a tiny power filter called a Palm Filter. I have felt the need for a protein skimmer but have been skimming the water by doing frequent water changes. Any other suggestions in this area?

Very cool. Skimming in that size tank would be fruitless IMO. A consistent water change schedule will keep the dissolved organic compounds down to a very manageable level. Something I did to help with my water quality was to hook up a canister filter (just the micron screen) to cycle the water as I scrubbed all the rock. It will "scrub" the water nicely, but I admit it's a bit over kill for a 2 gallon tank...

2 gallon tank, cool. You could do 50% water changes weekly and even add some Chemi-Pure to the filter and that would probably go a long ways in helping your algae problem. Can't wait to see some pics though. I have thrown around the idea of doing a pico but I don't do well enough keeping up with my nano...lol

Thanks for the tips! I'll be trying some of that Chemi stuff this week if I can find it around here, and then when the tank clears up some more I'll post some "new and improved" pictures. I did take some pics yesterday but it just looks dirty -- far nastier in the pics than it looks in person, which isn't too bad.
