New to nano tanks and Marine fish

Hi all,

I’ve kept fancy goldfish & tropical fish in my earlier years and always steered away from marine as it was generally perceived to be a very difficult hobby to get right. Nowadays I see that the methods are much easier and these nanotanks pretty much come with everything required.

I was wondering what sort of pre-setup nanotanks are good and what size would suit a beginner?

Thanks,

Tim

:welcome to nanotank.com!

First off, are you looking at keeping a fish-only tank, a FOWLR (fish-only with live rock), or a reef tank?

:welcome to the board. Decide what you want to do with the tank and then we'll see what we can do to help you along.

Hi Guys & thanks for the welcome.

As I'm a beginner I was thinking fish only with a bit of live rock going on a recommendation from the local stockist. I was thinking a couple of clowns to start with as I hear they're fairly hardy fish.

I would also welcome your guidance as to what other fish would associate well with them (and one's that won't grow too large).
Thanks.

:welcome to Nanotank!

As the guys said, find out exactly what you want and it will be easier to help from there.

As to your mention of clowns and compatible fish, if you are set on a pair and other fish as well I'd recommend at the least a 20g tank or larger.

There are many all-in-one tanks that you could use if you wanted to go that route.
There is also the option to use a standard bare tank and customize it as you see fit.

Again, welcome to the board!

Check out the 29g Oceanic Biocube. Generally, the more water you have the better wish fish only tanks. More water allows more dillution of wastes and are more stable than smaller tanks. The 29g biocube and the 34g Red Sea Max are the two biggest all-in-one tanks out there. If you limit yourself to a 12g-14g tank, you are not going to be able to keep more than a couple small gobies and maybe a small clown.

Hi Guys, thanks for your feedback. Looking at the hooby in the long run I may plump for a larger tank to fulfill my interests in choice of fish. Everywhere retailer I have been to so far has quoted me £700+ for a start up. This is slightly more than I wanted to part with initially and I was wondering whether there are any recommended websites, magazines that advertise second hand gear perhaps? Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Thanks,

Tim

I am not really knowlegable about any of the European (im assuming that is where you are from) but Im sure there are plenty. Buying a used setup is always a good way to save a lot of money.

you may want to check out reefcentral.com. they are a very large site and you might be able to post a "want ad" and there just may be someone in your area.

I know that AquaMedic also has an all in one type tank thay should be on the market now and if I am not mistaken they are a European company so I would think they should be readily available over there.
Of course you could always get a regular tank an then build you own nano, it just wouldn't have the streamed lines of an all in one.
