New Nano First Try...

Hello Group, I just got together this small 7.5Gallon Tank, Only filtration as you can see is a Remora P.S. However I will try to add a small pump for more circulation, My biggest issue now is temperature, runing at 31 C. (sorry fellows, too lazy to translate Farenheit)... in the midday sometimes reaches the 32´s.

Live Rock is from a short trip to the Beach, Will see How it goes... Hopefully I know from some others nano tankers that some small soft corals species can be kept around this temperatures, I wish at least a damesel fish can be there to add some movement, Sugestions are welcomed, Anyway Wish me luck in my first try in the B ig World of Nanos :lol:

WOW! That is hot! That's almost 90*F. What is the source of the heat?? If that is a maxijet 1200 on the skimmer, I would switch it to a MJ900. I would also consider running the tank with no skimmer and just rely on water changes.

It is a cool little tank though. As far as fish go, I would suggest looking at some of the smaller species of gobies or maybe a small false percula. Check out this link too... http://nanotank.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2758

Also, what kind of lighting is under there?

Thanks for the Welcome, Yes, that´s a Maxi J 1200, Besides that I believe the Hot Source is mainly the room/Backyard/City/Country Temperature We have summer almost all year long ; )

I will search for a MJ 900 as you say, Really Thanks for the Help, The lighting is a single 6.500k Home Depot like 11w Compact Tube.

The tank only has one day old, I believe at night it can be cooler... Will check the fishes available...

Yes the MJ1200 is 20 watts and creates a lot of heat. The MJ900 is less than half if I remember correctly. The other thing with hot tanks is you do not want the temperature to shift too much from day to night. So if your tank runs at around 32*C without the heater than you want to set the heater at around 29*-30*C. Ideally you only want a temperature swing of just a couple degrees. I think that if you get a MJ900 and maybe add a small fan that blows across the surface of the tank you should be good.

Personally though, I would remove the skimmer, and use a hang-on-the-back filter such as an AquaClear and then use a Koralia Nano powerhead for circulation. The Koralia Nano is about 900L per hour but it is very very gentle. I have one in a tank that is about 45L and it would not be enough my itself but I think it would work great in your tank. If you went with the smallest aquaclear (I think it is the 100) and the Koralia, you would have less heat and better circulation. then you would just rely on your water changes intead of the skimmer. Just my opinion though.

Jesse I forgot, Do you think it would be better to be without the skimmer for sometime? or you mean permanently? I would like to know how much time can it hold safe without a Water change, I will perform wc of course when really needed.

I dont think that a tank this small needs a skimmer at all. I think that water changes along with live rock can keep water chemistry very good in a nano tank. Many nanos have been kept very successful using only live rock for biological filtration, simple GAC (granular activated carbon) for chemical filtration, and water changes to remove the pollutants and restore the trace elements.

Also, you mentioned that the tank is only one day old which means that it has to go through it's cycle. I do not suggest doing a water change at all until the cycle has passed. You also do not want to add any corals or fish (or even snails/hermits) to the tank until the cycle has finished.
