Hey any one else have a tank crack?
When I came home today my JBJ was cracked, water all over the floor. The crack started in the bend and made a "J" shape down the side. I have only had this tank about 6 weeks and there was no accident (rock fall or anything else) so be warned. I'm bringing mine back to the store and will not be getting a new one in trade! This is definitly a flaw in the design - those sharp bends weaken the tank. With all the inherent flaws and fixes needed on these tanks I would not recommend them to anyone. Buy a square tank and a good light set and all those mod questions will disapear. Just my Opinion.

There's a bunch of threads about this over on nano-reef.com.

It seems to be worse in the 24g model than in the 12g or 6g models, but it sounds like they didn't use thick enough glass in any of them. Apparently having curves in the glass weakens it, and to counteract that they should be using thicker material.

Sorry to hear that you've become one of the casualties. I hope it didn't cause too much damage when it cracked.

Yea I'm a bit upset about the whole thing - I put a lot of effort into that tank and it had some of my nicest frags in it. I was planning on making it my classroom tank in the fall. But everything is fine - the corals went into my big tank, some of the rock into my 35 hex, and clowns and their cave rock went into my mixing/QT tank.
On a side note something I found very interesting - when I moved my clowns into the cube they never really seemed happy. I thought it was because they had come from such a large tank (125) and they would eventially adjust, and they did settle down after a couple days, but they just didn't seem right to me. Almost instantly after placing in them in the 20g they were back to their old selves. Even with all the commotion of the tear down they settled right in. I don't imagine any of the smaller tank owners out there want to hear that but it definitly influenced me and my future choices - but if you think about it with all the rock and stuff how much room did they really have in there. Clowns are more prone to live on the edge of rock not in it. So smaller tank owners with clowns may be better off with less rock and more free space - of course this is just an anecdotal observation.

It probably depends a lot on the species of clown as well. Do you have significantly less rock in the 20?

I'm glad to hear that you didn't lose anything besides the tank itself.

Glass? I haven't seen a JBJ nano tank made of glass in my area. Mine isn't glass. We are talking about glass JBJs' right? At least I hope.

At first, but now I put it all back in, but in a 20 it looks like a lot less - now they swim around the tank and then go back to their cave. As a side to my anecdotal evidence - my clowns had some black specs developing on them in the cube and I was starting to wonder if they were getting a parasite, but as of this morning the black is all gone, so it was entirely stress related. Its really quite amazing the turn around. They are even cleaning their rock off again and started their pre- spawning schimmy. I guess that tank breaking may have been the best thing that happened to them. Oh by the way, they are 3 - 4 year old tank bred ocellaris that I got when they were tiny. Just something for people setting up clown tanks to think about - less rock may be something to consider.

I thought it was acrylic. Only had it two weeks but I even asked how to clean it. I felt it the day I set it up and it felt like glass but I thought being molded no way.

well if you like yours, you don't want to hear from me - I am very anti JBJ cube after my experience with the tank, but I know some people like them. But I actually feel lucky that mine cracked so soon so I could get my money back before I had made any mods. I'm a bit slow and like to think about things, but had made plans to fix all the "major" probs with them but luckily didn't get a chance. The lighting is inadequite, the overflow system is terrible and the surface covered with a film, they over heat because of the closed hood and no ventilation, cleaning the coraline algae out of that tight bend is a pain, and then it cracked. My experience with the product was all negative. Sure they are cute little plug and play units - thats why I bought it in the first place, but it didn't take more then a week for me to regrete buying it. The concept behind them is good, but for that kind of money, one shouldn't have to fix so many known issues to get it up to par.
JMO ya know??????

Well it has to be thin (glass) because I swear I thought it wasn't. Well at least I can now start using a razer. I remember lifting the empty tank up and thought gee, this is so light. Must have been my brain that was light that day. I really don't care what anyone says, I LOVE my nano...until and when it breaks!
