nanocube lighting

well, I got a FREE nanocube. problem is, it doesn't have anything with it. I have a 100 GPH pump for it (similar to stock, will probably be upgrading it eventually). The biggest problem is that it doesn't have a lid. BUT, I just found a couple lids for about $30. they come as a package, one doesn't have the feeding lid, the other does. Aside from that, they've got all the lighting, etc that goes with it. They're both saltwater so they've got the 50/50 PC 24W lighting. My question is - can I take the broken lid and pull the lighting from that, and install it in the good lid without much hassle? I could probably wire it all into the same switch...

what do you think? Would the splash guard still work?

Are you planning on keeping corals in the tank? If so, the stock lighting is the bare minimum and I would suggest upgrading to a new hood retrofitted by Nanocustoms.com.

Then you would solve both problems with one purchase. :lol3:

I'm planning on keeping some mushrooms and polyps, and perhaps some xenia. That is why I asked if I could use two 24W stock PC's in the same lid for more lighting.

Okay, I see now...

I'm not a good person for nanocube lighting mods questions. I'd wait to Mike G or Dragon79 to chime in here. They should know a lot more.

I'm no expert either but what you could do, if your good with your hands, combine both of the lids.....choose the lid that you deem to be the best and take out the lighting from the other one and just add it...you'll have a total of 48 watts.....thats good enough for mushrooms, zoanthids, xenia, and GSP. By combining the two 24 watt bulbs, Its like having a nanocube 12DX. Just the way you want it....how many fans are in the hoods?

I have no idea how many are in the stock lids, but if I were to steal parts from one, it'd be double whatever an OG hood would have. Thanks for the info guys. BTW, how hard is this to do? Am I gonna get in over my head? Should I just stick with 2 WPG? that's what I have over my 5G tank and so far my shroom has gone from a quarter size to a silver dollar in a week. It just doesn't seem to be the best setup flow-wise and lighting wise, etc. That's why I was wanting to go with a 48W NC...

you might just need to have 2 seperate switches for the lights. that'd be easier than wiring them together. i'd go with the 48watts. it'll give you more options later on. you'll be kicking yourself when you find that perfect coral and can't add it due to insufficient lighting.
