Nano Chiller....

Reefers,

My 6 gallon is cycled and ready for play, but one important element is not installed, the chiller...

I was waiting for JBJ to launch their nano chiller but after I got off the phone with them, they will not release it until the end of July so that plan is scratched...

There are three nano chillers that have been on my mind and I have narrowed it down to only two...

The ICE probe didn't make the cut because you have to drill into the tank and even if you do that, it can only bring down the tank 6-8 degrees on a 20 gallon tank and from reviews is not that adequate at that.

Teclima Micro Chiller is a cute nano size chiller that I have wanted for quite some time. It's only 8 x 6 x 8.4 footprint and even has a nice design where it could fit into any decor; only draw back is that Tongs in Fountain Valley wants $369.00 big ones for it, that's the sale price, regular price is $399.

The runner up is made by Pacific coast chillers which has a good reputation on chillers. This nano sized chiller is 8.5 x 10 x 8.4 only slighty larger than the teclima and has a decent design to it; best part is the price only $233 shipping would be an additional $12 dollars no tax since it's from Arizona.

Here are the links to both; I NEED FEEDBACK FROM ALL OF YOU BECAUSE ALL YOUR VOTES COUNT; REMEMBER THIS IS A MIKE GUERRERO DESIGN AND IT HAS TO HAVE NANOTANK FEEDBACK.

I like the Teclima but I vote for the Pacific Coast chiller. The flow being 80gph on the Pacific Coast chiller but 120-180gph on the Teclima. (plus it's cheaper)

Hey Reefers,

I got off the phone with JBJ about one hour ago and I have cool news. JBJ will be launching two nano chillers for all of us, yes two chillers...

One will be targeted for 40 gallon tanks and the other smaller one will be for 25 gallon and below. Yes you heard me right, I said one is going to be targeted for the small nano users like me...

HERE IS THE BEST PART, BOTH WILL BE COMPRESSOR BASED!!!

They are scheduled to hit our LFS stores by the end of June and he also mentioned nanoturners will get them as well, I hope to see Chris starting the pre-orders soon...

I told him I will definitely wait for this one and I'll be one of the first to jump on board; so who else is with me???

Lets start the list here so I can forward it to JBJ.....

Mike Guerrero = 1 order 25 gallon JBJ chiller

Well that is good news, but even with my 150 watter, i have no need for a chiller. I can run my tank as low as about 76 if i chose to.

I like that it is not a peltier though, that is good.

Look forward to seeing it in action.

Jesse,

Do you have any idea what it's like to own a JBJ 12 gallon cube with notorious high temps?

I'll never forget the temps I got during the summer of 04 and 05 they were off the charts; then I upgraded lighting and it even got hotter.

The peltier was a good idea but it wasn't reliable and it quickly fell apart for cheap design.

Now we enter summer 06 and those that are not prepared are going to lose tons of corals and critters mark my words.

I just couldn't see myself without a chiller....

I must admit, a chiller would definately take lots of hassle from the game. I have a 12g that was running ~80 with the room temp warmest time ~ 76. I added an extra pump to the tank for extra flow and it didn't affect the temperature a bit.

I can not figure out exactly what affects temperature. If I set room temperature to warmest of 72 the tank still runs ~80. Just makes no sense. All seems to be ok at 80 but like you say...warmer months are approaching.

There is no doubt than many will benefit from a chiller like this... i wasn't saying that. Im just glad that I dont have to shovel out a bunch of money for one, thats all.

Semo, higher temps are most commonly caused by having tons of lighting, especially if the lights are close to the surface of the water. Also, having a glass lid can raise temps higher, and also the introduction of more and more watts to the system in the form of pumps, filters, etc.

Nano cubes generally have higher temps because the entire unit is closed off. The lighting is only 2" or so off the surface of the water. Also, many people upgrade the return pump that doesnt usually increase the temp too much, but nevertheless you are introducing more watts to the tank.
