I think that my tank is crashing because all of my corals are diying :cryinga: All of my water has checked out fine for the past week but everything still seems to be dead but the fish.

How old is your tank
how old is your test kit?
what kind of lights do you have and wattage , how old are the bulbs?
you say the perameters are fine what are they ?
what kind of corals are they?
Do you dose anything , what are your water change schedules ?

The test kit is new the tank has been setup for about 9-10 months the lights are a 50/50 24W bulbs. I have polyps ,xezina,hairy mushroom,candicane,and star polyps.
salinity=not shure
pH=8.2
ammonia=0.25
nitrite=0
nitrate=5.0
temp=80
i do not dose and i do a water change 1 ime a week

PH= ok is that with the lights on or off (run before the lights come on and after they have been on for awhile ) you may be having a swing
Ammonia = sounds like a bit of a cycle have you added any new live rock to the tank
NitrIte = is good
NitrAte = is good but to further bring down try chemi -pure it goes in the filter , what kind of filter are you running ? How often do you wash/change the filter pads
Temp = is good make sure there are no big swings in temp
Salinity = need to get that checked maybe low or high that could be causing the deaths or retraction
What size tank do you have , is it one 24 watt or 2 24 watt bulbs ,the lights may have reached the end of their useful life, and need changed
how much water are you changing in a week 10 %-20% week is good .
As for xenia I never could keep that here some people just cant keep xenia
as for the candy cane you may want to check the calcium levels and iodine levels . Hopefully others will be able to help you out more than I can

Sadie covered it pretty well from the information we have. I am concerned that you don't know the salinity though, do you have a hydrometer or refractometer? You said you do weekly water changes but do you topoff with freshwater before each water change? If you don't your salinity may have been going up a little with each water change.
You mentiomed that your fish have died off, was this recently? If it was then that may explain the ammonia spike. We need to know when you checked your pH like Sadie mentioned and we really need your salinity level.

I must have misread that part but his corals dying off could also cause the ammonia spikes in the same way that fish decomposition will cause spikes. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

Yes it is just the corals that are dying off the fish are still alive.I dont have anything to check the salinity with but i can go have it checked tonight.I do a 10% water chang one a week. As far as toping it off with fresh water the water in my tank does not get low for me to top it off with fresh before i do my water change.
My tank is a 10 and it only has one 24W light that is a 50/50. I just checked the pH again today and it is at 8.2.

you need to monitor salinity!!!!
but i think you nailed it there - your light is simply inadequete to keep any photosynthetic coral - a single 24 watt bulb on a 10 is a death sentence in any kind of length of time

I dont think I can add much to what john said:
Invest in a hydrometer,refractometer or a digi lab they are cheap considering the cost of replacing corals. As for the lighting that needs to be upgraded ASAP. That is half your problem if not most of your problem. HOw old are the bulbs this is secondary to the primary problems of not enough light , at this point up grading your lights are the difinitive fix .......

Here is a good fixture for a 10 gallon: http://www.hellolights.com/201xcoaqpcho.html . You could also use a MH pendant or build a canopy and install a retrofit or make a fixture in the canopy out of DIY parts. If you want to keep higher light corals then a MH kind of like this would be a great investment: http://www.hellolights.com/aqadhatamo.html . There are alot of other lights you can use and you may even find these cheaper elsewhere, I just posted these links as examples.

Glad to hear that you got everything back and working well... I would also agree, some pictures would be nice. What did you upgrade your lights to? I just upgraded my tank from a 10 to a 29, and the lighting was expensive, but in the end it is worth it when it comes down to replacing corals :sad: ~~~ James
