My pico

Hi everyone. Just recently got turned onto this site...love it! Here is my nano...
It is a Red Sea tank and is on a shelf in our apartment.

Tank was established about 3 months ago with live rock, sand, and water from a pre-established reef tank. The algae’s and most of the corals were also taken from our other reef tanks.

This nano has three Red Sea HOB filters on the back of it. In two I run charcoal, PhosBan, and White Diamond ammonia neutralizer in a mesh bag. In the other filter I run typical filter media.

The only circulation is provided by the three filters. One of the reasons I put the second filter on was to provide more circulation and it works out perfectly for a tank this size.

Parameters are good. Nitrites, nitrates, phosphate, ammonia are at 0. Calcium is around 420 and Alk is around 10dkh. Temp stays around 76-78 degrees.

The light is a CurrentUSA hood with an 18watt 50/50 PC bulb and moonlight. PC fan on outside helps keep the temperature stable throughout the day and night.

Maintenance

In the beginning this tank was a ton of work. Just like any other tank it had to go through an algae cycle, so I had to clean it with a toothbrush twice a day and siphon the detritus from the top of the sand bed. I put macro-algae’s in to hopefully starve out the nuisance algae’s but in turn they needed constant pruning. The Leaf and Mexican caulerpas needed trimming daily to keep them from going sexual and destroying my water quality. After I added the PhosBan to my charcoal sock all the algae growth slowed down and now I only have to trim my caulerpa's once a week. I do weekly water changes using water from a 100 gallon reef tank (preferably after dosing so my nano reaps the benefits). I put one pitcher above the tank dripping the new water in and one pitcher below the tank that is catching the water I am emptying from the nano. That way the water level doesn't change and I can do a gradual but huge water change weekly. I have to do fresh water top offs daily with RO/DI water (it usually evaporates 4-6 turkey basters of water a day). I make sure the temperature doesn't swing by using a fan during the day and an under gravel heater with a digital thermostat at night. Both are just a safety precaution not a necessity, but I do think they help maintain a more stable temperature. I clean the filters weekly and change the carbon weekly or every other week. Every now and then I scrub the glass with a toothbrush. I love doing the maintenance on this tank, so it doesn't seem like maintenance (except for the water changes...those are annoying!)

Inhabitants

Coral: Softies: Ricordea (orange/blue, blueberry, green/blue, neon green) Zoos (ice blues, electric orange, and various others) Mushrooms (red, blue dot, maroon, and green) Star polyps SPS: Pink digitada Green Acros Blue milli LPS: Trumpets Blastos Others: Invertebrates: Micro-stars Worms (bristle and peanut that I know of) 2 purple feather dusters Crocea clam Various snails Red and white pistol shrimp 2 porcelain crabs 1 pom pom crab Fish: High-fin goby (paired with the pistol shrimp)

Feeding

I switch between feeding the goby, shrimp, and crabs enriched brine and pellets (daily). Brine is fed with tweezers to make sure every bit gets eaten (I can't afford to have waste in a tank this size). Pellets are dropped in one by one in a clear tube to make sure they land in the right spot to be eaten. Of course they hardly ever hit the ground when the goby is eating. I put in a drop of phyto every couple of days for the filter feeders. The clam gets taken out during the water changes and gets his own bowl of phyto to clean.

Thanks for looking

I am happy you came over to this site. I had seen you over at nano-reef and told my brother Dragon79 on this site about your tank.

He has an identical tank like yours but with 36 watts of power. Man I'm really impressed with your tank.

I hope my brother buys some frags like yours. Can you really keep a clam with that amount of lighting?

Just curious since we always hear that it's impossible. I want a melody too because I have a coralife light 18 watt 50/50 just sitting around and I thought that your hood was this one.

However, after seeing you post on this site I see that you have a different light. Can you give me more pictures on how it fits over, or maybe the dimensions of your hood?

That would be very nice since my b-day is coming quickly and I'm buggng my little brother for a melody tank.

Mike

P.S
check out my brothers tank, it's in the 2.5 pico section.

I saw your tank on reef-central and it was enough to inspire me to get back into the hobby, so I owe you some thanks...

I'm starting up a pretty much identical tank to yours, but since I don't have another tank to take water and rocks from, I'm using my LFS which has really decent rock/sand and good, consistent water quality.

Plus I've got 5 gallons heated, aerated saltwater mixxed up from distilled water ready for water changes, etc. And plain distilled water for topoffs. I'm trying to keep as many nutrients as I can out of my system.

I'm thinking of running phosban too just for the heck of it, if I can prevent algae, i'd like to. But I wanted to ask you about your ammonia neutralizer... do you need to run it or do you run it as a precaution?

Hi

Just have to say WOW! you've definately struck a balance having a tank with lotsa frags and inhabitants in it; and you've got that clean neat look i love. Definately an inspiration to us all. I hope your clam does okay in there. and i love the goby shrimp pair.

Actually, there isnt much i dont love about it. (except maybe the SPS, but thats cos i just dont like SPS ;p)

Keep up the great work. And please update us often.

mikeguerrero-

Here is a link to the light
http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem. ... ct=CU01001

It actually sits perfectly on top of the frame, the only thing is that it is an extremely tight fit so you have to go with the Red Sea nano filters, and even then you have to run them without their lids. Which actually helps in top-offs b/c I can just turkey baster the water into the filters.

About the clam:

Tiny clams (less than~2in) rely mainly on phyto as an energy source, they later switch to photosynthesis. We were feeding it weekly (I think I included a description in my post). But it grew fast and we moved it into our 100g SPS tank under MHs. You shouldn't put clams in tiny tanks, however, unless you have somewhere to put it later as it grows.

Thanks everyone! Im so glad I found a site dedicated to nanos!! :D

IMBO_ The ammonia/phosphate remover is a must. It took out my hair algae and slowed the growth of my caulerpas, so I wasn't pruning every day. Id rather run it than run the risk of having to spend a day scrubbing rocks!

Erm... everywhere I check it says White Diamond is for freshwater... am I missing something here?

I was wondering the same thing so I checked as well, it is for freshwater use only.
I also meant to ask in my earlier post, where did you get the high finned red banded gobie and pistol shrimp? I am looking for a pair and wondered if this was a LFS find or dod you have to order online and if so where did you order them from? Thank you in advance, Skip

Ill check on the White Diamond..we dont use it anymore but I think I still have the bucket.

I got the goby and shrimp at a LFS. Liveaquaria carries them though...but they want $30 for the shrimp and I paid no where near that price!

See is a LFS will order you one.

i remember you and your tank from nano-reef or reef central...can't remember which one but I asked you about that little clam. Anyway, that's real cool setup. I kept those first 3 pics of your tank(from the other website) for inspiration towards ideas for my melody tank. I like what you are running in your filter system, I am running the whisper 10. Because of that I would not be able to get the lights you have. I'd like a setup like that that, but I would have to rid my lights, and rid my whisper 10, so I have to think of different ideas to make it better. Any suggestions would help. I am already going to add the phosban, sounds like a good idea. Haven't had a problem yet with hair algae, so I think I may get it as a preventative. I am thinking of adding a 2nd HOB filter, the one that comes with the pico .75, for the left side, it'll fit and add flow equally for both sides of the tank.

Dragon,

There is something I don't get, you have 36 watts of power over your pico, whereas he has only 18 watts.

Wouldn't you be safe that you have double his output? Maybe I'm missing something that he has extra in that hood?

Can someone shed some light in this direction, because I think his tank is awesome but I'm unsure what is really under that hood.

The pictures look superb and everything looks like it's thriving.

The only light I have is the 18 watt Current USA...the link I gave before gives an excellent description of the light. Everything does so well b/c the light only has to penetrate 6in. 36watts is awesome!, but I like the way all of my stuff fits so nicely together on top.

Dragon79- I switched what I am running in the HOB filters and I like it much better. Im running SeaGel..it is a combo of PhosGuard and charcoal. If you are going to use PhosBan (that actual brand) be warned. Ive heard cases where it actually kills SPS...read RC. Sounds like you have a good plan...cant wait to see it! :D

I see,

I love your tank and want one for my office. I just wish my coralife 18 watt would've fit, but it's only 9 inches in length while yours is 12 inches.

You said you use three nano filters right, are those the very small little clear ones that run on .75 picos?

Mike

p.s
even though my brother dragon79 has 36 watts, they hang over his tank at a much higher distance than yours. From your pics I see that you are thriving with your lights being that close.

I keep pushing my bro to add light intensive frags like yours, hopefully he'll start to pack them in, thats what makes it look more like a reef full of life.
