has anyone moved there tank farther than six hours?
should i do anything special for when i move?like battery powered air pump....ect.

ill be moving 430 miles away from here......new construction job. ill be living there for 4 months and then back. i was going to leave my stuff in a 75g tank at my buddies house but i dont think i could live without my tank for that long. i dont think he would want to give the stuff back once i got back anyways.lol.

any ideas would be great....thanks

I have had no first hand experience moving the tank any further than cross the living room  with that being said I would suggest a portable pump to keep the air moving around , but then when they ship they are with out air for 24 hours or longer . I guess you wouldnt need it but I would think that it would help keep stress down by having air and h20 movement . Sorry that I couldnt be more help to you tho  sadie.

I would try to get your hands on a couple battery-powered air pumps. You can probably find them at Wal-Mart or fishing stores. They use them to keep live bait alive.

The only other thing to consider is the weather. What will the ambient temps be and how will it affect your water temps?

I'd also move all or most of your corals in coolers. It will help keep water temps stable.

If space isn't an issue keep as much of the original water as you can so when things finally get back in the tank its more like a water change than having to adjust to new tankwater. Coolers are a must like already mentioned. If you have a DSB you may want to start over with a shallow sandbed since any disturbaqnce of the DSB combinedd with the move will probably trigger a large cycle. Good luck, Skip

do the cooler thing. Put your fish in one, your corals in another, and get a watertight thing for your live rock. With the LR, fill the thing with water, and with the others, just half-fill it, and use battery powered air pumps. A good thing about coolers is that not only does it keep it dark to keep stress to a minimum on fish, it also keeps the temps cool. I move my stuff 3 times a year (both FW and SW nano) to school and back 2 hours each way. They make it in all seasons whether it's 100* in the shade (like this august) or 10*F and blowing (like christmas break last year). Overall, a really good setup.

Just get a large cooler. Put everything in it with a couple 'bait bubblers', or battery powered air pumps, and you should be fine. Before the hurricane I ended up getting three of these. They were all about $10 each. There is a more expensive type that actually plugs in the wall, and when you lose power kicks on and runs on batteries. Unfortunately the petsmart, and petco were both out of them.

The cooler will help keep things insulated against heat/cold while you're moving. You can drill a couple small holes to drop the airline tubing into it. Add some velcro or a strap for the pumps and it'll be easy to transport.

I moved my FOWLR from Houston to DC, two day trip in the back of a Uhaul in 5 gallon buckets in Janurary. I brought them into the hotel room at night and ran the protein skimmer but everything made it fine. Water was COLD but I didn't have corals that are more fragile.

I'm moving my next tank 2miles on Friday. Going to be a pita but everything gets put in 5gal buckets for the trip.

The only thing I"m going to do is turn my lights off for 2 days prior so everything sort of hibernates.

i have already cut down my photo period so it wont stress my corals out as much. well at least that is what i was thinking. i feal much better at it now that i hear that you do it too.

Good luck with your move, Erik. You are obviously well prepared and have given it much thought. I'm sure it will go fine. Your tank is in good hands. Keep us posted and let us know how it goes.

I keep thinking I'll buy a bigger house (so I have room for more tanks), but the thought of moving puts a damper on my thoughts every time. I'm starting to think it would be easier to just build on a room for tanks. That way I can custom design the plumbing/electrical work so it's ideal for aquariums.

april,

i think we all have imagined something along the lines of a bigger and better set up. well at least i do all the time.lol

im sure everything will do fine. ill also be in the process of building a better set up with another ten. this time im going to use a built in overflow and a 8 inch stand and a 6 inch canopy. im also getting a reefkeeper and flush mounting it in the stand. been thinking about doing a 15tall instead, still under debate. will keep everyone updated and will have pics also. thanks
