moonlights

With the moon light affect you want to give some area, a degree of zero lighting. That will enable the sessile animals to sleep without any light.

Moon lights are cool and I have three of them on my 72 gallon bowfront; I had two and went to just one more. I thought about getting more but realized that if I do I'm not allowing them to sleep.

I run the 1 watt coralife moonlights, they are really strong so that is why I recommend the 3/4 or less power for your tank.

Hope this helps out...

I also agree that it depends on the brightness of the LEDs you have. A pair of LEDs would give you good overall coverage but if the LEDs are too bright then it will almost be like your actrinics never go off. I saw a 2 1/2 gallon nano at MACNA that was lit by 3 blue and 3 white LEDs, the tank appeared to be well lit. The zoos and stuff in the tank were just in it for the conference and did not stay in the tank normally but one of the guys at the booth said he was thinking about trying it out fulltime to see if the LEDs put off enough light for the zoos to survive.
I used one of the Coralife 3/4 watt LEDs Mike mentioned in my 12 DX, it mainly lights the middle of the tank but this gives the fish and stuff places to go to get away from all light if they want to. HTH, Skip

I think the advice that Skipm gives about the 3/4 watt on the 12 gallon is a good benchmark for you to use.

I did two 3/4 in my 12 gallon for many months untill I upgraded and just got 1 R-2 moonlight instead.

I have many threads on this forum with examples, pictures that is of my moonlights...

Hope this sheds some light in your direction....

Im currently running 4 on my 20 but they are focused so i dont get a big light spread. As for the lighting a tank with all LEDs - Im about to do that. Im waiting for a guy to get his supplies in. He uses white LEDs and actinic LEDs. Im going to use those on the 2.5 . maybe ill hold off on the moon lights for now.

I would rethink that idea. From what I have heard, they have not as of yet got the right wavelength of light for a reef tank out of those LED's. I would check out this post, this topic was previously covered there. ----> http://www.nanotank.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1849
