Montipora... Toast :(

So, a really wierd thing hapened today.

I have this beautiful encrusting greem Montipora sp. that I have had in my tank FOREVER. Last week, I went on an apstasia nuking mission, with some assistance from a 10 ml syringe and the good folks from Joe’s Juice.

There was one particular apstasia that was right on the side of my monti, and when I hit it, a small blob of joes juice landed on the monti as well. DRAT! So, I got a big syringe full of tank water and blasted it really good a few times, making sure I had gotten all of it off.

Two days later, I noticed about a dime size of a bleach spot on the monti. Bummer, but it grows pretty fast, so I wasn’t overly concerned. I should have been! Today I was checking it out and that monti, THE ENTIRE THING, is alabaster white. Completely nuked.

Now, I don’t know if the Joe’s juice was the precipitating factor or not. I know I spilled a little where it didn’t belong, and I have to assume it’s fairly toxic stuff. So that’s possible. I do have some orange/red plating Montipora sp. in the same tank that is going freaking NUTS, and is fine. So if there is some other kind of pathogen or cause, it only affected that variety.

So, did I do it with the Joe’s Juice? If so, why did the rest of it die? Could I have saved it by isolating it somehow? I’d love to hear your insights.

I had a similar kind of situation. I moved my frogspawn in my tank.... It fell and landed on my Xenia. I noticed some of the polyps started to disintegrate. two days later the entire thing was shrivelled up and just a pile of goo.

I think you probably did do it with the joes juice. Probably could have saved it if you had scratched off the infected area so it couldn't spread. my elephant ear rubbed one of my monti's and it started dieing off. I scratched the area and the rest of the cap is doing fine.

Sorry to hear about that though. That's a tough loss. Joes Juice is meant to kill.
