Modding an aquaclear500 for use as refugium

Has anyone done this? Were you happy with the results? Did you have any problems or suggestions you'd like to pass on?

I've read through a few threads on nano-reef.com. It seems that most people don't really have any issues and if you hook up the surface skimmer attachment, and put in your baffle it's a decent amount of flow without being too strong for a 10 gal tank.

Those are cool! The 500 has a "real" 428 gph. flow. Even though they claim 500. They also have a 13.5" opening. Yes, they are huge. I checked one out for my 15g. to mount my IceProbe in. Decided to use the 300 instead, 8.5" opening. I think it would work great if you had the room to mount it, and can use that flow. Don't know anyone that's tried it though.

Yes, I have. Mine has been running for ~6 months now and I've had no issues. I did have to fumble with my baffle for a while to make sure I could keep turbulance down and keep critters from getting blown left and right. Here are some pics....

I've made my own too. My problem now is, that the back of my tank is full with the refuge and a skimmer. Its looking pretty ghetto. You might consider just going for a sump with a fuge to keep the back of the tank looking clean.

Did you have to gut out the old lighting and cram in the new one? If you could post a pic of your hood set up that would be awesom.

How were you planning to mount the IceProbe? I'm getting mentally prepped to do a 10G nano.
