Me again - AquaPod vs Nano Cube?

Thanks for all the info you gave me on my previous question.
I have just been up to the only LFS anywhere near me - mainly to buy some snails.
Whilst there I looked at the only 12 gal nano tank there - it was an AquaPod. They do not keep Nano Cubes due to the high shipping costs from CA, they can get one for me but it would be about $60 more than the AquaPod.

So my obvious question is AquaPod vs Nano Cube???

You guys are the greatest... Thanks..

with all the reports of JBJs that are cracking spontainiously I would seriously consider the aqua pod tho they are so new that it makes it hard to say . Personally I would go with the basic 10 and fit it however if that is not an option I would go with the aquapod

i like the HQI metal halide fixture that is available for the Aqua Pod, personally. I think that the problem with cracking in the nano's can be taced partly to poor shiiping/handling, but i think that most of the problems with them have been solved in the 2006 models.

Is my 12 JBJ gonna just explode one day when I am at work? I am assuming I have a 2005 model. Are these things cracking early in the tanks life..like when filling it or something, or does it crack months after the tank is setup?

they can crack at any time in the life of the tank but from what I have read and understand it is usually early tho that is not set in stone .....it is mostly the 6 gallons and the 24 gallons that I have read about spontaniously exploding but there are those here that have kept the 6s with out incident such as dragon and mike and dj

:happy001:

I'm just foolin round sadielynn...but that spontaniously explode thing sounds serious..

On a side note..My wife wasn't too happy when I started reading books about this this hobby. I think she is warming up to it, I catch her peeking into the tank and actually caught her talking tanks to our childrens physician. He has them all over the place at the doctors office and he keeps them all up.

Still, She wouldn't be happy to see it spread out in the bonus room carpet..I know that for sure..

ohhhhh well hopefully that wont happend to use and well alot of reefers ant nano-reef complain about nano tanks cause they do all kind of mods and keep doing this and that so all that drilling and big movement of course the glass or other parts may brake or even some affirm that their tanks crack after having them for 6-10 months but IMO not sure is that all that lighting mode they do they over heat the glass or something about that and makes the glass to crack and like i said i even move my tank to place to place fullly stock(i know i shouldnt do that ) and never crack ..nock on wood .... and im always putting my hands in laying on it and nothing but hopefully ill never see the day were i find my tank without water and everything dead if so ill kill my self but anyways i think if your careful everything will be fine and about aquapod vr nanocube i look at them an like them bouth..... maybe i should try another 12g but know aquapod so then i can see the difference and then help others

ok enough of this.

My opinion is some of the problem comes from the tanks not being set up properly on a solid level surface, I think the ones that crack after being set up for some time may have to do with initial set-up. I have no real preference for an Aquapod over a Nanocube, I have 2 cubes (a 6 and a 12 DX) and saw my first Pod yesterday. I thought the way the feeding door is hinged on the pod was kinda flimsy and it made a heck of a noise when I raised the top like something was binding. I would probably give a pod a shot if I was going to set another prebuilt tank up but for now I am going to concentrate on a couple of scratch set-ups.

This is slanted, I know, because I own the JBJ 24g Nano Cube. If you care about tank appearance the JBJ tanks look nicer. You really need to see them side by side at a retail store. Some LFSs sell both. Compare the hoods and internal filter. Notice how the JBJ's hood is well formed and the plastic seems to be heavier duty then the aquapod's. I heard the aquapod has better lighting and filter, but as far as tank appearances go the JBJ looks more attractive. The JBJ spontaneous exploding sounds awful. Is this an urban legend?

The main thing about the JBJ's is replace the compact lights about every 9 months to keep the coral heath optimal. You'll also need to rinse out the sponge filter every 3 or so days to keep nitrates down.

If I could do it all over again I'd just buy a small 20 gal or so tank with no hood and add my own filter and lighting. The tank would have no hood at all and the lighting would be power compacts or metal halides that would be suspended over the tank using legged light holders.

I have to agree that it may be easier and you have more options just to start from scratch with a bare tank but the cubes have a certain look and IMO will always have a place in the reefing community. Its all a matter of personal preference but I also feel its important to know your options before commiting either way.
