Major Happy Dance! My new LR came w/ a teeny feather duster!

I am setting up my first reef tank. It started out as a 6. NanoCube, but it has instead evolved into a AGA 20H instead. Long story...

But anyway, last night I put in some live rock that I bought at a local marine livestock distributor, to begin the cycling period, and not five minutes later, out pops a teeny tiny little feather duster, probably just 1/8 of an inch long. I couldn't believe it! I wasn't expecting any goodies, but here he was. So far, he's all I've seen. There does appear to be a tiny bumble bee snail shell in the crevices of one of the rocks, but I think it's empty.

Should I not get my hopes up that he'll survive the cycling period? I have some cured rock in there (premium stuff, cost a fortune, but it's gorgeous, and that's where the feather duster came from), but right now it's mostly uncured rock, which will have a lot of die-off. It's pretty rough looking rock that's already sloughing off some stuff.

you wont believe what pops out of LR after its been in your tank for a while...those feather dusters can make it through hell and back.

good luck, sounds like your tanks doing good.

It should be fine.

Congrats on getting some LR, with some interesting critters to watch while it cycles.

If yours are anything like mine, you'll end up with so many of those dinky feather dusters you'll go mad. I end up pulling them out by the handful because they're a pest in my tank.

Thats whats nice about Live Rock...its alive!!! If youre lucky enough, you might even have some baby brittle stars, clams, and stomatella...and much much more...infact I find it more interesting to see how the live rocks evolve into a giant livebearer than anything else. Good luck and congrats on your first feather duster sighting.

Oh, if I got a little baby brittle star, I would faint!! No doubt about it. I picked up my second load of LR tonight and put it in. I'm so excited!! I think I'll need more, though. I'll have to try arranging it and see how it looks. I think I'm as excited to be getting the LR in as anything else!!

Keep a good eye on it. Seems like there is something knew all the time. At night, I would flip the light on and rush over to the tank. There would be weird stuff I didn't know was in there. Live rock is so cool.
