Long Stringy Thing???

Hi Every one,
I have been noticing these really long very fine sailing things in my tank when the light goes on. As soon as the light goes on they seem to retract towards the live rock they are based on. I can see some small base they go into but you can't see it when they are not out. It ranges in length from 2 to 6 inches and every 1/8 inch has a short filement coming off it which is why it sort of looks like a sail. Anyone have any ideas????

Ive tried taking some pictures and the thread is so fine that it wont show. the other problem is that they only come out at night or when the light is off. Then they retract and disappear. Sp far tehy dnt look like they are doing anythign bad but, i would still like to know what they are.

From your description they sound alot like feeding tentacles from something living in the LR, it is hard to ID any better than that w/o pics though. FWIW they are harmless if thats what these are.

well I think That I have a pic of your string. these two came on a frag I bought. they both produce a string about 2-3 in and then reel it is with whatever is stuck to it

i havent looked at this one for a while but the stringy thing doesnt have a base like that. It retracts only when the light comes on and nothing is really stuck to it. It sometimes extends about 6 inches. Like i was saying it would have about 20 or 30 little strings off the side of it that form a type of sail......it is really neat but you can barely see it. They havent bee around as much lately since the rock they were on tumbled and things got rearranged. Oh well. thanks for the help. :)
