Hey everyone. I'm at three weeks since my set up, 1 week of liverock. Today i noticed this rusty reddish brown growth on my sand where there is little water movement. Is it slime algae? should i siphon it out, or let it be? I read somewhere that part of the cycle involves the growth slime algae followed by green hair algae... Thanks!

well in the process you eventually get the diatom and then hairy algae (not always) but in a new tank is weird when you get some red slime but if is really red looking you should take it out and add more flow to that area with a pump and just to prevent add some chemi-clean that work for me i just had it twice .... i think the flow help and chemi-clean cause if not wrong the red slime is more a kind of vacteria not an algae so thats why chemi-pure was made for like an antibiotic

weird now i see picture no that is not red slime that is normal diatom bloom take it out if you want to and add more flow in that part and lower you lighting time that might be the problem and dont worry as soon as you add your cleaning crew they will take care of it or time... but if bugs you siphon it out ....

I am guessing it's not the really red stuff yet.....

sounds like normal diatom growth to me, give it time it will pass.

You will get to enjoy all the colors.....brown, red green......welcome to the world of a new system!!! :)

I agree diatom bloom
keep the lights out other than to peek that will help quite a bit also if you can increas flow will help one other thing you can do is siphion it off to help it "out" a bit  but with time it will go away
Ed that was a text book picture of red slime

Cool thanks guys. It doesn't really bug me. I jsut wasn't sure if it was more harmful than beneficial. I guess i'll leave it. It's a good reminder that i'm taking care of a living system since most of my tank right now is rock, sand and water... and the little baby snails lol. they're cute.
