Is there anything else that makes a sound like pistol shrimp

I keep hearing pistol shrimp sounds coming from both my marine tanks. I did have a pistol in one tank, but I removed it and took it back to the shop. But I am still hearing the sound, in both of my tanks. Is there anything else that makes that kind of sound? Maybe I'm just losing my mind, but I keep hearing it. I suppose I could have hidden hitchhikers... ?

Does a mantis shrimp make that sound? I shudder in fear of having one of those.

I know that manitis shrimp pick at the plastic cup that they are kept in at the LFS that i go to and that makes a sound that you can here from about 15 to 20 feet away from the tank. I dont know if they are able to produce a sound on their own though.

Ohhh....let me tell you about mantis shrimp. If you have one in a lot of live rock, you will never see it. These guys are reputed to be the most intelligent creatures around and I swear it's true. I spent a six week war with one with many deaths in my tank. NEVER put your hand in either tank because they can split your finger in two. Many horror stories about these beautiful creatures. Good luck. Go to GrimReefers.com for info and watch the clip of the mantis killing a very large crayfish.

I doubt that I have a mantis shrimp, because I've never lost any fish or anything else, for that matter. I think if I had one, it would have killed something by now. ??

I was just wondering if Mantis shrimps make a noise like a pistol.

yes the mantis shrimp does make a noise like a pistol shrimp.....
Erik!!!!

That is SO not what I wanted to hear... I think I hear evil laughter ( ) coming from your direction.

Great, now I'm going to have nightmares about mantis shrimp...

I swear, if a Mantis gets anything in my tank, I will go after it with a sledge hammer. I was at one of my LFSs Saturday and there was an older couple in the store needing to get "food" for their "pet." I asked them what their "pet" was, and they said, "A mantis shrimp." What do you say to that?? I just said, "Oh." And I'm thinking... MURDERERS! Of course I didn't say that.

Yes. Mantis make exactly the same sort of sound as pistol shrimp.

But if you're not seeing empty snail/hermit shells, then it's probably just another pistol shrimp.

Many people keep mantis shrimp in species-only tanks. Some of them are extremely colorful, and they're fairly intelligent, and interesting to watch.
Many of them will take prepared foods as well. I've never understood peoples aversion to feeding live food to critters in their reef tanks. That's just part of nature. Everything in your tanks would eat live critters in the wild, whether they're microscopic live critters, or macroscopic live critters doesn't really make much difference.

I believe a mantis would show itself by now. They are very inquisitive little critters, it's those ugly crabs that hide and make sounds.

Crabs don't make popping noises like matis and pistol shrimp. They don't have the appendages necessary to "pop".

B,

I had a hairy crab that made a popping sound with it's claw, once I caught him the sounds stopped. I'm not sure if it was a popping sound but it was a sound that I was able to pick up and it was him.

B,

I'm not sure, and cannot say it was the crab, but the sound stopped after he was removed.

My brother would always say, whats that clicking sound everytime he came over to visit.

?????? I may never know????

Okay, guys, it's truth time. I think I finally figured out what was making that "pistol shrimp" sound in my tank. It was driving me nuts and keeping me awake at night, because the little 10 g. where my seahorse is in is making that sound also -- and her tank only has dead rock in it, so a hitchhiker would be nearly impossible.

Both of my tanks are making this noise... I can't have hitch hikers in both tanks...

I think..... it is the heater. I have the same brand submersible heater in both tanks, and I think it makes a clicking noise when it goes on and off. And the noise it makes sounds exactly like a pistol shrimp (which I once had, but took back to make room for the Pom Pom Crabs).

So, that's it. I think (I hope) it's the heaters. Weird, huh? Don't I feel stupid???
