Introducing myself

Well, I've done it! I had my 2.5 gallon minibow out for a short QT period(It used to be a dwarf frog tank in my FW days.), and I can't bring myself to put it away! Now, I'm a nanoreefer!

I have been reefkeeping for a relatively short time, but with great success. I currently have an 80 gallon reef tank with a 29 gallon refugium. This made it very easy to establish a nano, because I had plenty of sand/rock/frags to move over. I'm mildly pleased with my results, depending on if my colt coral frag ever perks up. When it does, I'll post a picture for your review.

I really like this site. It was recommended to me by my nano-mentor Sugar Magnolia from Coral Forum. I visited another nano site, but I prefer this one. I hope to quickly become an expert ( ) so I can contribute here!

Nice to meet you!

Wow Conni, your here too! First it was Ristuko Nashida, then Sugar Magnolia and...

Good to see you here as well of course. Pretty neat little site it seems, thought I would drop in and see if I can learn a little. After seeing SM's little Nano...I am gonna have to get motivated!

You know, Expat, the Internet really is a small place! I just can't get away from you! No, just kidding! Nice to see you here! It looks like we'll all be playing catchup to SM, though!

My 10W 50/50 lamp is just not cutting it, so I have decided to try my hand at my very first DIY canopy/light project. I'm hoping that if my husband watches me screw up enough, he'll take over! Nice or not, I can be proud if it's MINE. If it turns out okay, maybe I'll tackle one for the big tank! (Don't hold your breath on that one!)

Anyway, good to see ya, and thanks for the "hello"!

Your too funny FITD!

I know what you mean about Sugars nano, boy is that thing smokin hot looking. I gotta get one of those!

Lighting, I saw a cool looking little 18 watt PC I think made by coral life that I bet would fit. What size is your nano measurement wise? DIY, check out hello lights, they usualluy have some plug and play kits that might be the right size and even I can assemble them without screwing it up, so you should breeze right through that project!

Yes, I think I'll go with three 12 watt ballasts from hellolights. I'm pretty sure I can handle that part. It's the wooden canopy that I want to attach it to that scares me! It seems simple to see one from the inside, but the extent of my woodworking knowledge is in refinishing. I figure: you gotta start somewhere, and it's less intimidating to do a small one. If this wasn't a bowfront tank, I'd be all over it. . . Anyway, I'm no dummy. (No comment required, you!) I'm sure I can handle it!

What size nano are you considering?

Its not that hard, wood working that is. Not much to it, just measure twice and cut once! It works much better that way, sometimes learning is a slow and lengthy process.

Humm, I dont know maybe a 20 long or something. I havent really sized things up that much. Maybe a 10 if I ever free one of the 1/2 dozen or so I have, up. I am not much of a fish guy but I am a "certified" coral freak. With all of the frags I got going I am sure I would fill a 10 up real fast!

Good luck with your project!!!

Good luck with the canopy for the tank Conni. Three 12 watt ballasts! Woo! You'll have plenty of light over that little thing.

Howdy Imanexpat!

SM,

I'm looking at how dim it is with 10W, and I don't even think twice the light would cut it. At any rate, that's a ways into the future since the canopy has to be built first. . .

Sounds like a nice meeting going on in your neck of the woods. I'm very jealous! I sure miss that area of the country, especially in the spring and autumn.

TC,

I'm very impressed that you're going to take on the canopy building yourself. My husband loves to do woodworking so he was the one that built the canopy for the cube.

I may see if my hubby wants to go to that frag workshop. It's a bit over an hour away, but I'm interested in that black list that Borneman is going to be speaking on.

The colors are just beginning to change here and all the people from the city clog up the highways on the weekends to head over to the mountains. Ugh...pain in the neck!

Hey Zack! This is a very nice site! I think we CF folks are becoming nano-obsessed, whereas everyone else in the world is trying to go bigger and bigger! This place is much more sane than other nano places, like your site is. See you around!
