I Can't Win!!! Damn you Nudi's!!!

Well, it's been 3 months that I've been battling out with these zoanthid eating nudi's. I'm tired and I'm fed up. My zoa's have never been the same. I'm constantly syphoning out nudi's left and right. I've done about 3 hot fresh water dips within 3 months. I refuse to dip my LR becasue I fear of losing all the living things that have grown on them. I also have reason to believe that they are diseased in some way. Some of them have white dots. It's hard to tell if its just specs of live sand or something else. I usually just blow them off.

My questions is:

If I remove all of my zoa frags out of the display tank, will the nudi's starve and eventually die off?


I am open to suggestions.

hot fresh dips???? huh was the water hot? I'm confused? Yeah, I just use lugol solution and leave them in there for 7-10 mintues with a shake here or there. My live rocks are fine but those nudis aren't :twisted: I just bring a flash light once every week before going to work (dark) and look at each colony for egg sack or nudis. I take note on each colony and after work I create my iodine solution and dip them suckers!!!! Worked great! Good luck

Yes, hot fresh water dips. about 10 to 15 minutes worth at 100 to 125 degrees. If I can find it, I'll attach the link from RC where I found this method.

I here iodine being used but not the lugol solution kind. But they sell the lugol solution at my LFS so I might use it as an option.

Wow, didn't know about temp that high for freshwater! I always thought it had to be acclimated to the same temp as the tank itself.... Thanks for the info. Yeah, go with Lugol! Whats $15.00 compared to what your dealing with but then again thats my opinion. Hope it works! Have you gone to any LFS lately. I got a Armor of god frag from Ne Alameda and some other frags. :mrgreen:

I too have never heard of using hot water... that will REALLY stress the frag for sure. I have also ONLY heard of using Loguls Iodine when doing dips... other iodines are never suggested mainly because of their weaker concentration.

I was thinking the same thing Jesse. Thats why I thought same water temp would be best bet when doing those dips. But it seems his corals doing fine, WOW! aquemeni5110, I want to be updated if you use the lugol when doing dips. I just want to see how well it works for you since its been really good for me. Yeah the most important thing with nudi dips is the fresh water and the Lugols... temp should be about the same but doesnt have to be exact. I am VERY interested to see the rc.com thread about hot dips though.

As I stated, my corals haven't looked the same but they are still thriving. They are a little bleached and it's hard to tell if it was the upgrade to MH lights or the high temp dips that may have caused it.

islandcreation - I'll for sure let you know how it goes if I try the logul's. I picked up a crocea clam and yellow polyps from Great Bay last week. I'm cool off the zoo's for now until my tank is nudi-free. :mrgreen:

Jesse - Here's the link where I read about the hot fresh water dip. It was posted by reefkeeper59. Let me know what you think of it. And well it's not for everyone, it is one of many methods that have been tried on nudi's.

Thanks... Damn, you must do alot of traveling to go that far! Then again I drive from santa rosa so it maybe the same distance. Funny how far one will drive to see more exotic corals ha,ha,ha I'm playing around with lights and got a halide system but they sure are bright especially on a pendant! I don't know what I'm going to do, either be the Luxor (Las vegas) of santa rosa or switch to a VHO system... Just got the halide too (250 watt pendant).... Wish I had a house oh, I forgot I live in California that will never happen :cry: ha,ha,ha true still!

I'm in hayward once a month and great bay is around the corner as well as lucky goldfish (15 minutes away). I'm thinking of stopping at New Alemeda next time I'm there :mrgreen:

Okay, so I didn't really get a answer to my question on this post. Will the nudi's die off if I remove all of my zoo's out of the tank? Assuming that there are some still crawling on the live rock.

I don't think they will... but then again I never heard of someone taking out all their zoo's. Did you get a chance to check New Alameda?

IF I am correct they should. It will take some time though... I dont know how long the live span of a nudi is from egg to death.

Jesse - The reason why I ask is that If I were to take all the zoo's out and starve the nudi's til dead, I can later start up new colonies of the same zoo's by fragging the healthy one's I now have in my 3g. Of course, I'd have to give away all the zoo's in this tank for a fresh start but who would want nudi infested zoo's?

Have you tried a freshwater Lugols dip for the zoo colonies?? there is no reason why you shouldnt be able to get rid of the nudis on the zoas.

i opened that link but didn't read much of it - way too long and i wouldn't even consider dipping my corals in hot water, so it wasn't worth my time, seems just crazy to me, even if it did kill the nudis.
lugols and fresh water is effective at killing adults, but needs to be repeated every couple days to fully rid a colony as the eggs will live. a lot of people lately have been having success with tropic marine pro coral dip. it is used in a salt water dip for 15 min and kills a variety of pests. however i just bought some and it is very expensive

Okay, so let me see if I have this right. Use fresh R/O water? And Lugols? The Kent brand one? Repeat every couple of days. How many days exactly should I wait before doing the next dip? I know that the zoo's need time to recover. Would it be wise to dip all my live rock as well? I've got a few that have zoo's attached to them now.


Also, I have a large colony of zoo's with tiny white spots. It seems to be irritating and keeping the polyps from opening up fully. :cry:
