how to clean surface water

I have had my .75g going for about 4 months now and never had a problem with stagnant surface water. However, a couple of days ago, I noticed a clear slimy film on the surface and I can't seem to get rid of it. I haven't added anything to my tank. Yesterday I tried increasing the flow of the filter and that didn't help. Does anyone know what this might be due to and/or how to get rid of it (& prevent it from happening again)
The tank is too small for a powerhead. Pics of my tank are posted in the 1 & Under Club forum.
Thanks

2 ways - 1 is with a surface skimmer - if you use an aqucalear filter - get the aquaclear surface skimmer - only about $9 (not a protein skimmer)

The other is to take a piece of saran wrap and lightly touch it to the water surface. The gunk should stick to the saran wrap
