How long before turning on Protein Skimmer

New tank has been up and dark for 5 days now - What would be an appropriate time before firing up the protein skimmer?

Also I have read some not so rave reviews about the protein skimmer that comes with the 28 Gal NanoCube HQI - Anyone have any advice?

A skimmer can be ran as soon as you can get it fired up. Now it may not start producing any skimate for a few days as there is usually a break in period that most will need to go through before operating well.

Yes the skimmer that comes with them leaves a bit to be desired from what I have herd and read. Since I dont have one of these tanks Im not really sure what would work the best.

I personally waited until the cycle was fully completed. I only did this because in my mind I wanted the organics to break down in the water column to help the bacteria grow and die (aka cycle) until there was an equilibrium of die off and growth. Wont' hurt to have it on, but may delay this equilibrium in my opinion.

Interesting - I switched the wave maker to full on for both pumps and turned on the skimmer - now the pumps are "burping" bubbles. I looked into the feed chamber for the pumps and they have about 5 inches of water covering them. The pump in the chamber furtherest away from the skimmer seems to be doing it the most.

Should I be concerned???

Most pumps and plumbing require a day or two to build up a certain amount of "slime" to get rid of micro-bubbles and just generally break in. I don't have any experience with your tank but I would just wait it out a day or two and just let em run.

Well I'm stumped  . Sorry but I don't think that the burping is an issue. Hopefully someone that has that brand of tank can chime in.
