Do you test for the chemicals that you are adding? You might be overdosing if you aren't testing for them. how long has your tank been up and running?

This is very true... in a nano, you shoudlnt be dosing ANYTHING that you dont test for. Regular weekly water changes should be maintaining close to the proper levels. THe safest and best way to start/maintain caralline growth is to get a Ca/Alk tester and maintain proper levels. Also, time is very inportant!

My tank has been up for 9months 3weeks and 3days =D

And nooo I haven't tested any of the chemicals that I'm adding, but I will be sure to now!

My bf works at a petstore too, now isn't that handy...lol

i believe that purple up has iodine in it and if your dosing both that could be trouble, jesse is right though i don't recommend any dosing at all in a nano, changing water is cheaper, easier, and far more benificial
coraline will grow if all is right

Yes, Water changes are a must. I use purple up 3 times a week in my 6g. I dose it the same time as my calcium. Also, sufficient lighting and plenty of cirulation will contribute.

Brian, are you testing for Ca?? Because there are pretty sufficient levels of Ca in salt mixes, Purple Up is a Ca supplement, AND you are dosing a second Ca supplement... unless it is an SPS-dominated tank with clams too, that is probably way too much.

in a nano especially a 6 g you should be dosing anything at all like jesse said doing weekly water changes should be sufficent for keeping your levels where they should be dosing should be left for the bigger tanks that the water changes are done less frequently on you could be over dosing on the chemicals and in turn it could be working against you you levels might be too hig for corline or anything else to grow i would stop dosing except for maybe kent essential elements if your going to miss one of your weekly WC's and see how things go from there in SW less can be more. hope this helps

I think you meant "shouldn't" right? lol

WHat people dont seem to understand about PurpleUp is that it is just another form of Ca. If your Ca levels are where they should be, there is no reason to dose this stuff. BTW, there is Iodine in there too which is not a good thing to overdose... there is some evidence that it can be harmful if overdosed actually. Also, there is strontium, magnesium and carbonate. So you arent just dosing ca when you are using this product.

Patience, proper Ca, Alk, and Mg levels, and actinic lighting... that should give you good purple coralline growth.

I'm dosing a lot of Kent supplements including purple up. Would it be bad or drastic if I just stop dosing them all and just do the regular weekly water changes?

i wouldnt just stop dosing i would dose right up till its time to do the next weekly water change then after i did the water change i wouldnt do it anymore that way your levels dont just drop off the chart but if your doing weekly water changes then you should be alright even if you did stop but thats just my .02
