hi, yesterday my cousin that i recomended him saltwater tank like 2 months ago so yesterday he told me that his 2 damsels had ick and his dwarf lion was dead :anxious ... he has a 10 gallon tank with a aqua filter 20 g... and he stressed his fish cause he didnt do a water change like i told him and his nitrate was at 50 and salinity at .026 so i went to his house to fix everything and i told him about garlic treatment for ick the thing is that i dont know if tell him to remove his chemi-pure and poly filter .... cause when i dosed my tank i didnt remove them and the treatment work so ... yes or no he wanted to post here but he doesnt speak english (should i tell him to post whenever he has a doubt i think alot of people speak spanish here ohhh well) anyways or should i tell him to use copper cause he doesnt have any vertebrates and he is never gonna put any i think??? he has just LR and LS... and he's always busy or at work a really unresponsable saltwater tank owner ... im planing to help him with water changes but i dont have time sometimes ohh well just wanted to share....

Whenever you dose a tank with any medications you should remove the carbon and Chemipure if it is being use because they will absorb the medication. If it was me and I was going to dose copper I would never do it in the tank with the LR and LS, they will also absorb copper and leach it back out over time so if he ever did want to keep inverts he would have the copper to worry about. Net the fish and place them in another tank or even a clean bucket with a heater and some form of aeration, it would be very inexpensive to just go ahead and get a small tank to be used as a quarantine/hospital tank. BTW, he may have lost the lion due to having too high of a bioload in the aquarium, a lionfish is not a good candidate for a 10 gallon tank. I wouldn't recommend over 2 or 3 small fish for a 1o gallon tank no matter what kind of filtration he has. HTH, Skip

there are a few that do speak spanish here
I think that mike speaks fluent spanish
skip also gave great advise as well
I would not remove the filter media for garlic but for MEDICATIONS ie copper
he could also try a fresh water dip with distilled water that helped with our damsels when I had them

two damsels is max for that tank...dont replace that lion, he is too much for that tank.

And i believe everything else was covered by the other two.

THX for the advice skimp and well i will tell him to stick with garlic cause of the reaction that cooper does and well i try to tell him that the dwarf was too much for the tank but he insisted.. but the original idea was that he was gonna give to the lfs the darmsels and he was to keep the dwarf lion alone but he die first of bad care of his part and well i dont know if he is gonna replace it .... he has to get rid of the ick first i told him and then is up to him but i think he is gonna stick with the darmsels cause he loves them :D anyways ill tell him sady that some people speak spanish here i hope he post cause he is really  on this kind of stuff.... but anyways thx for reply.

If he insists on replacing the lion he should upgrade to at least a 29 gallon tank IMO along with the appropriate sized equipment to go with it. JMO, Skip

Explain that if he's not going to give the fish an appropriate sized tank, with decent filtration, and then regularly maintain it he might as well just go flush his wallet down the drain.

If he wants a tank, but doesn't want to spend as much time maintaining it, then he needs to rule out predators, and in my opinion saltwater, and just go with a freshwater tank.

I've had to have this conversation with a few friends since I started into the hobby.

They see a healthy tank and want one. Once you explain the time involved to set one up, research things, then maintain them, most of them have decided they don't want one after all. Especially once they start looking at the costs involved.
