Hi, I know this is a nano forum, but i have got a friend with a 55 gal. tank and she can't seem to get her ph down, even after water changes....she can't use a ph adjuster because she also houses coral....what to do? Thank you very much for any help you can offer...she is ready to give up on her tank. She has had sooooo many problems....EastcoastLady_1

HI Guys,
Sorry it took sooo long to get back with u guys....I think her ph was like 8.8. She mixes her on salt water using her tap and amquel to cut the chlorine in her tap water...Why is this an important factor? Also, she recieved a letter from the city she lives in that the water was contaminated with coliform bacteria, would this have a bearing on her ph....Thanks in advance...You all are a great help and wonderful group to be a part of....Thanks....EastcoastLady_1 :)

Well RO/DI water has a PH of 7.0 when properly aerated (power head running for a bit). So using tap water sets the stage for a whole host of potential problems from PH, algae, and introduction of toxic heavy metals. My first thought would be to stop using tap water. RO/DI is best IMO, but RO, or even distilled water is better than tap. Start with that and then mix the salt and let mix for a day before using and see if that helps. I would do smaller more frequent changes (20% or so a week). But let's see what other people recommend too. If there is a lid then open for a bit, and see if the surface of the water is agitated and scum free. That will help O2 and CO2 exchange better in the water and may help the PH.

Good luck. :cool1:

Yeah some salt mixes mix up at a high pH. Most will settle though after they have been mixed and aerated like Tim mentioned. Also like Tim mentioned try to open the lid if there is one and open a window near the tank. That will naturally lower the pH. Is she adding anything else to the tank?

Also, I dont see why she couldnt use a product like Kent Marine pH buffer. It safe to use even in reef tanks.
