hi everyone, im new here! I am also looking for help/info/support for my up-coming 10gall nano! I have been doing fresh for about 3 years so im not entirely new to fish but im new to salt!I have been to numerous other fish forums and everyone is allway's..well lets just put it in simple terms..jerks.. so I have been reading here for a while and really like it and the ppl so desided to join! I will be setting up my first saltwater nano in a few months... as soon as I get the money (im still paying of my $200 camera with $20 memmory... LOL) but as soon as I get that paid off im going to do my nano! so far what I plan on is...
10gall tank with HOB filter (I will eventualy upgrade to a skimmer but that will have to wait a little while cause im only 14 and dont get mega $$ LOL I do have a job but.....)
heater, thermomiter (sp), and I have read about the gravity things for salt water ???????
salt mix
arigrite (sp) for subtrate
10 pounds of live rock (which will cost about..$90 or so AHHHH)
oh and I wont be doing coral ( :cryinga: ) because my lighting is only 15 flourecent watt and I REALLY dont want to pay $100 + for a new light..(at least not right now )
and now for fish/clean up,,, this is were most of my prob. is LOL (well I do need help with the gravity thing cause I know nothing about that....)
I know I want (and have my heart set) on at least a clown! but other than that I have been having trouble..cause I REALLY like the flame angel (have allway's admired them) but I was told (by the same ppl that treated me like crap and misslead me and many ways) that it was to big for a 10 (?) and another thing is that I really like damsel fish (yellow tailed to be exact) but I have heard, read that they are aggresive..but I would like to get one to be my first fish cause they are hardy (or so I have read..but who knows at this point :cryinga: ) and I dont want to spend $25 on a clown or something and have it die...so..and I want some tankmates and im really confused and stuff so HELP... I also need help desided what clean up crew... I have heard things like shrimp (which I like) snails (which I think some are pretty but if they are like freshwater snailes..want nothing to do with them LOL) and hermit crabs (heard they dont really "clean up" but oh well LOL) so
[HELP!!!!!

welcome to nanotank

i have a ten gallon reef. i love them.

ok here i go......
you dont need a protein skimmer, if you keep up with regular water changes youll be fine.
i wquld stick with just the clown, if the damsel gets to aggressive you wont have to fight to get him out of the tank. as for the flame angel, not a good idea for a ten gallon and for a first fish.
you can keep low light corals, check...... www.liveaquaria.com

ok...thanks...well if the flame is out (which im not supprised) and the damsels are out (not supprised by that either) than what would be a good tankmate that would be a good begginer also? thanks.. also what kind of low lights? even with my pathetic 15watt ? wow thanks!

with this being your first saltwater tank I would stick with the clown or if you would like more fish then go with a pair of clowns till you get on a reg schudule with water changes and all being that your not going to run a skimmer and then once the tank has established (usally about 6 months) then you could start looking for other fish and all. as far as coral goes there are plenty of low light ones out there like erik mentioned so you could go that road also if you would like more to look at hope this helps

ok thanks! Im exited (even though it wont be for a while...) so (so I can start researching now!) what other types of fish an I get after about 6 months or so? also what kind of shrimp (I noticed you mentioned sexy shrip...but ive never heard of them) and goby's.. I also like jaw fish ( I REALLY like the mandrian fish but I KNOW I wont be able to have those..) also..... I was thinking about running a powerhead in their (I already have one) so would I need to run a power head in it? also...for the clown's would they like it if I got a fake anemone (sp)? hehe thanks all this is a big help!
you guy's are a LOT nicer thanks so much! :maitre

Clowns don't require an anemone. They will be just fine in the tank with rock and sand. If you do get a jawfish make sure to have a thick amount of sand on the bottom of the tank so it doesn't starve. I would put the rock in first so it touches the glass then add the sand so when the jawfish starts moving sand around it won't cause an avalanche of rock and hurt itself. Here is a link to a pretty good list of fish that are nano/newbie friendly. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scat ... CatId=2124
And here is Nanotank's own list of nano friendly fish. http://www.nanotank.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2758 Near the top of the page is a search button. It works pretty well. Also you could go to the tank photography section here and see if anyone's tank inspires you! Good luck.

:welcome to nanotank.com....

and well you mentioned that you want to keep some mushrooms and they yellow polyps with your light they will be ok the only thing is that they will lose color and get a brownish color cause of the zoanthelae (sorry bad spelling) so the yellow polyps will look like a dark orange color and shrooms might stay same color but little darker in color...

and well as pointed at liveaquaria.com look at shrimps you can see the sexy shrimps there my favorite by the way and also the cleaners shrimps are nice to have and on its own time they will climb in your hand...

here my sexy's

hi welcome
if i were doing a 10g with limited finances, that doesn't allow for proper lighting, i would do a pair of clowns, a couple sexy shrimp, some really nice live rock, and a really cool looking snail, or hermit crab - and maybe some macro algaes. if all goes well 6 months or so you can decide to add a couple cool gobies or other small fish like fires. saltwater doesn't have to be reef to be cool - but if reef is the goal, spending money is in your future - even a small tank requires certain minimums to be successful. we all have spent more then we care to admit sometimes :)
