Hello! (and quick question)

I've been lurking for a couple of days, but I finally registered

Right now the only "pet" I have is a 4 year old parrot named Stormy who is occassionally too smart for his own good :tut: He hates other birds - so he gets to stay king of his domain.

Stormy does, however, get bored easily - so I thought I would set-up a small nano cube to entertain the both of us. I've always loved looking at saltwater tanks (the colors are amazing) and my parrot would have something to watch when I'm at work.

I'm torn between the 6 and 12 gallon tanks . . . I have been reading up on both but I still have one question:
Is there a big difference between the 6 and 12 gallon tanks when it comes to moving them? I move around occassionally and would like to take the tank with me . . . but I worry about being able to lift a 12 gallon tank even with help.

:thanks

Personally, I wouldn't transport a tank of any size with water in it, but I'm just getting started on this nano stuff myself.

Go with the 6 gallon cube. It's smaller foot print will allow you move it around more than the 12. But it will require more nurture than the other since it's smaller you can have water go bad quicker if you are not on top of it.

Your parrot will love it, sinces parrots have color vision, they will love the colors of the salt water world.

mike how bout telling my guys that they should be entertained by the tank :D
my guys are scared of the tank and actually hate sitting next to it
all in all I kind of like the 7 gallon bowfront bigger foot print than the 6 gallon nano but ......well maybe I am a little partial ...... I too agree never move a tank with h20 it can brake btw what kind of parrot ?? we have a bcc and bfa

I've moved my three tanks twice this year and it's not fun. I'd go with the six gallon until you feel that you might stay somewhere for a few years. Moving my 20 gallon took a full day with breakdown and setup. Moving my 5.5 gallon took less than an hour and a half with breakdown and setup.

I like the new 6 gal cubes anyway and would love to see a few more of them setup.

Thanks for all of the advice!

I ended up getting a 5 gallon mini-bow with Coralife mini-compact light.

Even if I decide to break it down before moving it logically it should be easier since there will be less stuff in it to pack up like you guys suggested . . .

I have a wonderful 4 year old male Eclecus parrot who tells everyone that he is a "PRETTY bird". Our backyard and front yard are not that exciting - we don't even have many cars passing by. I wanted to get another bird to keep him company but he HATES other birds with a passion . . . so I decided to finally set up the saltwater tank that I had always wanted. I'm trying to stock it with coral and fish that are both colorful and will provide a lot of movement for him to watch.

kinda off the reefing/nano topic but: do your birds attach to one person and hate everyone else? cuz i have a yellow tiel at my parents house in orlando and they cant even feed it without the bird screaming and biting, etc... but the minute i come within vision she puts her head down to be pet, and when i leave the room she calls my name...mind you i only go home like once every six months and its become my job to clip her wings and nails when i get there cuz they cant...

they do tend to bond strictly to one person tell them to go slow when approching them talk softly to her , they can read to her sing to her to help her to trust them . she is missing her daddy this is kinda why she is grouchy

they have had birds since before i was born... this is our third tiel in my lifetime(the other two actually caught a cold and died from going outside), both the others hated me and loved everyone else...
not only are they sweet to her, but they feed her treats when appropriate, talk to her softly, try to pet her, take care of her 7 unfertilized eggs that she has right now, dad sings to her, etc... she is just miserable... but luckily for her i might be able to bring her down next year when i move into my fraternity's house...

yea she is just missing her daddy right now , if you can move her with you make sure people know the rules around her set them and inforce them , My girl loved anyone willing to play with her she was diffrent in that she was bonded to me but would allow anyone to play with her when I would leave or come back she had to see me then she was content to be with them :) I am the trainer of out lps birds and groomer I do the consultations with all their birds , we see our share of bird familys broken by kids going to school or rules not followed . also get her to a vet to make sure all is good that can sometimes be the reason for this bad mood syndrome IE if she has become egg bound , there is no reason to keep "dead" eggs in the cage consult a vet to learn removal , another problem with the pied and yellow teils is kindney failure. Our girl was sweet to the end but grouchier than normal when her kidneys started to fail

imteresting about the kidneys... the vet they talked to said sometimes the bird will get depressed if we take the eggs out before she realizes they are dead... so he said leave them in until she stops sitting on them, worked last year when she did this so hopefully itll work again...

Eclectus parrots are a little different - they don't bond strictly with one person since in the wild they live in a multi-species flock. They do, of course, prefer certain people. Right now he is in love with my father (which he sees on the weekends) . . . but he still cuddles with me and talks to me.

Really my parrot likes anyone who is a "bird" person - any non-bird person is sure to get bitten.
