Hi All. I'm new to the Nano experience. I have a JBJ 24 Gallon which has been running fine for about 8 weeks now. In the tank i have 10 kilo's of LR, a 1" bed of coral sand, 2 x Tangerine Clowns, 1 x Cleaner Shrimp, 1 x Sand Sifter Star, 1 x Red Star, 1 x Frogspawn Coral, 1 x Xenia. All is cool but i get a film of what i can only describe as Hard green stuff which builds and builds on the glass of my tank. Is this normal. i scrape it of every 2-3 days but it returns. I do 25 litre water changes every 7 days, have replaced carbon in rear chamber with cured LR rubble, i have also fitted a Koralia Nano flow head to improve flow. All test results are fine with water. Fish and Coral seem happy. will post some pics soon.

There are lots of types of algae that are a nuicance in our tanks. I have to clean my glass everyday.

You get more algae depending on how much food (nutrient) you put into the tank also.

Maybe try cutting back a little on the feeds or at least making sure that your fish eat everything that you put in the tank.

Would love to see some pics of your tank.

Welcome to the forum :!:

I think i have heard algae blooms are a natural part of a tank i usually clean inside of glass wash foam type filter and just recently got the film off the surface of the tank after a 3 month battle keep up the work it takes time to get that crystal clear water which i now have for the first time since setting my tank up.

I agree with Geoff on the feeding

I'd like to add that for algea lighting also = nutrients.

I've found that 8 hours of light for my stuff has been plenty to keep everything happy and growing. Any more and I get more algea growth.

On a side note I have a magnet glass cleaner and clean the glass daily. I find the 2 minutes spent cleaning clean glass to be easier then an hour scrubbing algea encrusted glass

Greetings and welcome to the forum!
Their are several reasons for the algae most of them related to nutrient as Geoff as explained.
Their are a couple of questions that if you would answer may help us to understand what may be going on.
How often do you feed and how much?
What kind of lighting and how long do you run it?
What kind of water (is it R/O water) do you use to make up your water for your water changes?
What do you run in the filter box in the back chambers?
And what do you use to clean the inside of you glass?

Wow thanks for all the responses.
I feed 1/2 a cube every day.And net what is not eaten within 5 mins.
I run the stock tube lighting (T5)
I change using R/O water
I still have the sponge in the rear chamber, i have removed the carbon and filled with LR Rubble.
I have a blade and a tough sponge for cleaning the glass.

Okay sounds like to me that you’re feeding allot, now this is different for everyone and dependent upon the livestock you have but I would cut back a little maybe to a 1/3 of a cube.
You didn't say how long you run your lights, as Boo suggested 8 hours are plenty and maybe cutting down to 7 may help with the algae growth.
You said you removed the carbon did you replace it with anything besides LR rubble if not I would put in some ChemiPure Elite in the filter box to remove any phosphates.

Looks like you are well taken care of!

:welcome to Nanotank.com!

(I started rinsing my mysis shrimp in RO to help reduce excess nutrients, works ok but it is a bit of a pain - a brine shrimp net makes it very easy)
