Half Of The Coral Reefs Could Be destroyed...

You have direct control over your purchases, buy from local groups, frags or anything out of someone else' tank, takes the pressure off the reefs.

I was reading somewhere that the US may ban anything WC from reefs in an effort to save them, if that happens, your LFS will only be supplying dry goods and maybe farmed critters. I think this is a great idea.

It does cost a bit more to buy farm raised and captive bred fish/corals but it is a much more responsible thing to do. I would personally rather buy a frag of something from someone than buy a WC colony. I also buy CB fish whenever they are an option. If someone is looking for a challenge they could always try breeding fish, there are quite a few that have been successfully CB and others that have only been bred a few times.

I agree this is extremely alarming. I try to do my part and other than my open brain all my corals and fish have been tank raised. I think this is the best we can do as hobbyists to try and save the reefs. There are lots of things out of our hands which are destroying the reefs, but I believe if we all traded frags from existing tanks rather than buying WC it can help.

Reading this article reminded me of the discussion given by Dr. Ron Shimek at this years MACNA, his discussion was about how historically reefs have died off and then been reborn in new areas. It was a very interesting presentation and it made you think about what we might be able to do to help slow this cycle down.

I wish we could get some more frag trading going on here at our site. Jennie and quite a few other reefers here have had some great success.

Might be time to start another one up again.

Aquaculture corals are really beautufil and although they come on cement blocks you can re-glue them on your existing rocks once you get them home.

Aquaculture is becoming very popular in recent years and is getting a lot of attention via cable tv.

Last night my wife and I were watching some discovery channel and came across a channel known as Eforce, I think it's environmental force; well they show how Eforce patrols all over the key largo in Florida finding pouchers; lobster and sea turtle to name a few and finding some good people in between.

While in the florida coastline they spotted two gentle men diving right off shore pulling out rock; as they boarded the vessel the two divers, father and son showed their permit to lease certain acres of sand bed off the government.

They then bring in tons of dead live rock and seed the sandy floor till they create a large reef; they come back in about one year and its full of life; all forms of coraline and bacteria are on the rock. They then harvest it to our LFS; the Eforce asked them live on TV what they get for the rock; they replied about $1.50 per pound.

Wow, our LFS are making some cash off of us... But this episode made me realize that there are people out there that care about our endangered reefs.

I made my first aquaculutred SPS coral purchase yesterday, it's beautiful not any more expensive than wild caught, just I know that it was grown on a cement block.

When my tank is complete I will be joining the frag team on this site...
